Hi all,

I have an eight month old Teambuilt Strat and it crackles like mad (through the amp) when I slide my hand up and down the neck. Not touching the strings, just sliding along the back. Don't get this with any of my other CS Strats.

Any idea what it could be? Could be winging it's way back to Fender UK some time soon I guess!

Static!
I occasionally get this too. Living in a fully carpeted, centrally heated, dry house is a big part of the cause!

Thanks. I did wonder if it was that but it only does it on one instrument (I have four EC strats, the other three don't do it but this one always does it)

My EC strat does it when you rub the pick guard. I dryer sheet takes care of it for awhile.

Mine did it too for a while... problem came suddenly, stayed for a while and then solved itself without any interference... strange eh?

Odd!

This one just seems to do it all the time (none of my others do it).

It's actually going back to Fender UK soon for a repair (tone control isn't working right) so I'll mention it to them and see what they think.
Only difference between this and the other three - that I know of - is this has a super-thin paint & nitro body finish (instead of the standard EC Strat paint & poly).

It can help if you discharge the static that you are charged up with. Grasping a central heating radiator before you play can help sometimes! Sounds daft, I know, but if it reduces the "charge" you are carrying around with you, it can make a difference.

I may try wearing Marigolds whilst playing. It could just start a new trend..

Thanks for your suggestions 8)

If it's static can you think of any reason why I get only get the crackles with this one guitar?

I'm afraid that I have no idea why one guitar does, and not them all. I had a NOS Nocaster a while back that was particularly prone to it, while the others, in the same room didn't.
I can imagine that wearing rubber gloves might solve the problem, but wouldn't do anything for the playing. An alternative, perhaps, is to dress totally in rubber, while leaving the hands free! I think there is a need for more research to be done in that area!

Some general thoughts/remarks....

Mine is one of the Ltd edition EC Greys, so no special thin paintjob or nitro finish. I don't think the finish has anything to do with it...

If I recollect correctly, another thread on this very subject (i.e. crackling Claptons) was posted in the Ask ME section not too long ago.... you certainly aren't the only person experiencing this problem...
EDIT: this is the thread I was referring to: viewtopic.php?f=14&t=69777&p=826731&hilit=clapton+crackle#p826731

There is one major difference between your new axe and your others; VN pups vs. Lace pups...

My older Lace equipped Clapton does not crackle either....

I recall reading an interview with Lee Dickson in which he explained the reason for the oriental rug EC is using onstage these days was static...

The introduction of the oriental rug coincided with EC's switch from Laces to VN's...

Which leads me to the question if VN pups are more susceptible to static then Lace Sensors....

Please let me know if Fender UK has any solution or explanation for the issue. I may return mine too if the problem recurs.

I dare you to post a picture with you wearing the suit playing that Strat.

Hahaha ..... nope

Bobby, many thanks for that post. Perhaps you're onto something with the VN. You know I'd completely forgotten about that difference between this guitar and the other three - DOH!

I'll get a nice rug and some Visvims.

IF statics is the cause, then DON'T wear rubber soles; rubber soles insulate, thus causing the buildup of static electricity. Better to wear leather soles instead.

If you still fancy the white rubbery sole thing you might want to check out Red Wing as well. Slightly more afforbable than Visvims and endorsed by EC in the past.

Got three pairs of EC Redwings which I bought in 2001 when he/they released them - great boots!
