I've just taken delivery of a David Glimour Relic strat and I have a concern / question about the tremolo arm. The arm on my Relic strat is extremely lose when screwed into the bridge ,even when screwed right down as far as allowable. The arm is so lose that it just flops to it's lowest position depending on how you hold the guitar.

When you want to use it you have move your hand down to to try and grab it. When screwing it in the arm feels too small for the threaded hole. You almost feel as you are going to pull it out when using it. I'm really not sure if this is a 'feature' of the Relic (ie. representation of wear) or if I have a problem.

I am lucky enough to also have a David Gilmour NOS and the tremolo arm on this is fine.

I would appreciate any comments from anyone that owns or has played or handled the Relic and your experiences with the tremolo arm.

Thanks in anticipation.

check to see if the little black spring is in the trem hole, it may have fallen out, you can buy packs of them if it's lost. Also if you have a NOS the trem should be the same try switching the trem arms, but check for the spring first off.

That's the problem, the tension spring is missing from the tremolo arm hole. Many thanks for your help.

Great, glad it was a quick fix! you must be a huge DG fan to have both the relic and the NOS, which do you like best?

Thanks again, I really should have been more observant. Yes I'm a big Floyd and DG fan. As a student studying electronics (worked on VCOs that ended up in some of the early synths) I was part of the Floyd road crew for the first UK DSOTM tour but unfortunately this did not last too long as I had to get back to college.

I've had several strats that emulated the Floyd gear and decided when the signature was announced to get one but then ended up with two! As well as being excellent instruments they are part of a unique phase of rock history and have another meaning to me. The cost was high but only live once and they will be a great legacy for my kids and grand-kids.

Regarding which one I prefer is difficult. Although there is little difference in the instruments basic parts they somehow play and sound different. I guess this in down to individual material characteristics and tolerances etc. The NOS is such a superb looking instrument you almost feel like playing it with kid gloves on. Where as the RELIC almost encourages you give it all you got. I think the NOS is going to be a legacy show piece and the RELIC will be used daily.

Choosing between the two I would say that the RELIC gives me the best in handling and sound. It certainly brings back memories of the Floyd.

Bear in mind that the relic has two coats of paint, and it has undergone some serious cosmetic surgery which the NOS body has not. The neck has also been relic[ked]. These might affect the tonality of the guitars. Of course, no two body or neck blanks will be identical. The rest of the components should be relatively standard.

Your absolutely correct, the two instruments do have a difference in their tones. Oddly their handling some how also feels different, it's difficult to say exactly what it is. Either way they are both superb strats.

:D
