I'm just curious as to the variations in the weights of custom shop strats (and Strats in general). I'm new to the CS line of Strats, having purchased my first about three weeks ago. When I was trying it in the shop and comparing it to a couple of others, it felt pretty hefty to me, as in not much difference than my Les Paul Traditional, which I have not weighted yet. I picked up a little digital scale today (great little unit for $10 from Lee Valley) and it turns out that my CS Deluxe weights in at 8.20 Lbs.

It all depends on the features of a specific guitar.

I'm not sure why people obsess about the weight of guitars, you either like how it sounds and plays or you don't.

Of course it depends on the features of the guitar, which includes, wood types, tuners types, etc. And the question has nothing to do with whether or not one likes the sound of the guitar. It's a simple question!

They vary quite a bit, the Custom Deluxe series usually do weigh up in that range

Many people like a lighter Strat, and many of the Wildwood 10s were in the 7.0 pound range, some in the high 6 pound range

The Claptons average about 7 3/4 pounds, but have seem some over 8
Most consider 8 and above a heavy Strat

Mine range from 6.98 pounds (Wildwood 10) to 7.80 pounds
Wildwood posts the weights of their Guitars on their listings,
I prefer between 7.0 and 7.5 pounds

EJ spec's his Sig model to be light weight, most are between 7.25 and 7.75 pounds

Interesting. I don't really have a preference. What are the bodies of your's made from? Alder? Mine has 2 piece ash body, and now that I think about it, in the product description it states that it is made from "premium light weight ash"! Ha! I guess they got that one wrong. It doesn't make any difference to me. I think my 52 Hot Rod Tele is even heavier and I'll have to check it when I get home.

I have no idea. It's my first ash bodied guitar. But it's in good company with my 52 Hot Rod Tele which weighs in at 8.80 Lbs!

It is heavy for Ash, but there are some out there.

I have both Ash and Alder Strats right at the 7.0 pound range

7.0 Alder Strat is less common, there is a lot more light weight Ash

So alder is generally a heavier wood? Does that mean it is denser?

I decided to google "ash vs. alder" Wow. I couldn't believe the history of that topic on music forums, here, the gear page, tdpri, strat-talk.... People get pretty passionate about it!

A few months ago I was out browsing guitars and came across an ash tele or strat (can't remember which) with a clear finish. What struck me immediately was the beautiful grain. I knew from that moment that I''d eventuallly get one.

As so many people have mentioned, there are too many variables to say for certain what tonal differences exist between the two. I tend to agree with the arguement that PUs, amps and pick or finger attack will produce far more differences in tone than wood.

From the reading, I gather that ash is generally heavier than alder, particulalry if is northern ash as oppossed to swamp ash, which is generally lighter. What ever, it sure looks nice.

In general it is easier to find light weight ash then alder.
My experience is that it is very hard to find a Strat with tremolo below 7lbs. Yes they exist, but to me they are not desirable. They are not balanced, aka neck heavy. I think anything between 7 -7.5 lbs is a lightweight Strat.
3.5 lbs is a lightweight body, than add the neck and all the (vintage style) hardware which is at least another 3.5lbs. It is very hard to get below 7 lbs.

I would imagine that it's Northern Ash, which can be heavier, but I bet that Strat sings! :)

It has a lot of sustain, though I think that also has to do with the large C profile neck. It does sound really nice and I have quite taken to the PUs, which at first I wasn't so sure about. The guitar is very well balanced and just sits in your lap like a well behaved dog

Both my 2011 CS Strat and my 2019 Gibson R9 are just under 9 pounds. The difference is negligible.
