Hi there,

I just did it! I custom ordered a Telecaster using the custom calculator. Now a period of waiting (6+ months?) has begun...I'll try to share this experience with you...let's start with a description of the guitar I ordered. I would love to know what you think of my choices:

'60 heavy relic custom Telecaster, surf green, double binding, light ash body, dark veneer (round lam) rosewood fretboard, 7.25" vintage radius, 6105 frets, threaded saddles, nocaster neck pickup, Abby handwound hot '63 bridge pickup, modern wiring...

Let me explain some of my choices:

I like the sound of a telecaster from the '55-'59 era (ash body, maple board, white guard), but the looks of the early sixties custom (coloured) telecasters and I try to combine the two with this project. The only difference now between a '55-'59 Tele and 'my' guitar is the round lam rosewood board. I chose the round lam/veneer board because I guess that's the closest in sound to an all maple 50's board. Everything else is more or less the same: light ash body, threaded saddles, staggered magnet bridge pickup. I chose the nocaster neck pickup because I do like (as one of the few) the sound of an early 50's tele neck pickup...that muffled, 'flute-like' sound...I do NOT like all of these strat/tele kinda 'twisted tele' neck pickups...

Do you think my way of thinking is correct? Is there anyone that has experience with the waiting time on these custom-projects?

Thanks!

That sounds great. I did kind of the same thing but with a strat. I ordered a 61 strat but with a round lam neck. I was sort of going for that transitional period when they had the spaghetti logos but started to incorporate round lam boards. I did however order mine March 2012 and have not received it yet which is a bummer. I am a lefty which could be one reason why its taking this long.
Best
Mike

'When You're Ready' also stands for 'when you're ready' to play the waiting game. We have played this game often in the past and look forward to seeing your end result. My last CS order took nearly 18 mos when you add in the fact that it had to be sent back for a different neck. My last production order took nine mos. 6+ mos should be a walk in the park. Patience is a virtue.

Wow 18 months. In regards to your neck, did they mess your specs up? makes me a little nervous about my incoming one.

I thought I had made it simple for them, but they decided to use a '65 Stratocaster as the platform for what I wanted and neglected to swap out the stock neck for that period guitar for the one I requested. Thus, the guitar had to go back.

My strat came friday and I waited until Saturday to open it. Wow...honestly the best strat I've ever played and also my first custom shop. Obviously being a lefty I do not get to try a large variety out but I do have many other strats, and this one is great on every level. I will post some pictures once I get a chance but so far its awesome. The custom shop team clearly does a great job. The only thing I noticed is that the round lam board is thicker than the vintage strats I've seen. Im guessing they are all like this?

It took awhile for my custom shop 65 Fender Limited Editon Strat NOS in black with a AA flame neck, but the wait was worth it. Beautiful guitar and it rocks through a Marshall 50 watt head!

I just haven't posted in awhile, but I still read the forum. Lusting for several guitars from Fender. The Blackmore Strat is on the top of my list and then there is Brownie, what a guitar!

Of those I've communicated with who now own one, the reviews are superb. I'm not a fan of relics. My Gilmour is an NOS. Had they done such a version for the Brownie at an attractive price, I might have pulled the trigger on it. But that wasn't the intent of design of the project.

At least I have a Custom Shop Eric Clapton "Blackie", but that "Brownie" would have been the icing on the cake! I don't fancy relic's too much myself, I prefer NOS, but "Brownie" oh what a guitar. :D
