Hi guys, when did the Custom Shop and Masterbuilt Clapton Strats start to be produced with the staggered tuners.

This question has been raised by various community members, also in the Ask Mike Eldred section which is now closed. Mike never bothered to answer this question.

Another question on this matter is whether or not Clapton's personal guitars have these staggered tuners. I have looked into many pictures and video footage and it's very difficult to make out for sure.

The only thing we do know for sure is that the 2005 backup Strat for the Cream reunion shows made by Mark Kendrick had staggered tuners.

I do not believe EC's personal guitars finished in EC Grey have the staggered tuners. The later ones finished in Daphne Blue may have them, however I'm just not sure on the matter.

The only persons who could probably tell you for sure are Clapton himself, his guitar tech or Todd Krause. So if anybody has a line to either of these gentlemen I'd be happy to find out!

From personal experience I can tell you that the earliest Masterbuilt Clapton I came across that had staggered tuners was a 2009 model. Also it are always instruments made by Todd Krause that have this feature. Maybe he knows something others don't....

BTW: I'm only aware that certain Masterbuilt guitars have staggered tuners. I have not seen any Teambuilt guitars that sported this feature, it's not in the specs either.

I've had a doubt about a compound radius fretboard on Eric's personal guitars in addition to the staggered Klusons.

ME's answer was NOPE - Clapton hasn't specified including the compound radius on his axes.

What do you think from this picture? I think they look staggered, but I'm not 100% sure.

The image is quite large so you'll have to click to zoom in fully.

Ufboy, Elloit,

Thanks for your insights and information. The picture is pretty good. Apart from the different heights, the shafts also get slimmer on the thinner strings. As the shafts on the first, second and third string are extremely narrow in this picture, I'd say those are definitely staggered tuners.

Well, with that matter more or less settled, I wonder when Fender is going to respond by putting them on the signature models.

i am pretty sure if you look at the pic of the daphne MB clapton at music gallery, you can see the staggered tuners.

i had frank verify this in person for me, which he did. i know that he didnt specifically request it that way from todd, so i guess todd is doing them on all his MB claptons.

its weird to me how free form the execution of the spec (i.e. tbx, tuners, neck shape, etc.) seems to be on the clapton- by that, i mean between the TB and the MB claptons but even across the various builders who may do a MB clapton - at the end of the day, just goes to show if you want a MB clapton strat (or any clapton strat that as is close to possible as eric's own guitar) you are safest having todd build it for you.

Just checked my Mercedes Blue Strat, one of the three masterbuilt by Todd Krause 'as for EC' in 2003 and she has staggered tuners.
I'll make a photo tomorrow
