Hi, Trying to figure out what PUs are on my guitar. Are they Master Buit by Cruz, or are they Texas Specials? Serial number is: 6217. If they are Cruz PUs, what is their rating?

Cheers, Jared Purdy

As Butterscotch said in a previous thread:

"It might help to ask consumerrelations@fender.com, giving them the serial number and any other details you have, and see what specs they give you for that specific guitar."

The guitar came with three Master Design single coils (two Master Design single coils and a Duncan TB-11 bridge humbucker on the HSS models).

One might assume that, but that is why I posted the question in the first place, because I did call customer service! The cs person pulled an inventory work sheet from 2011 (because the info that he was looking was also vague) and he said that it listed Texas Specials as the PUs, not what Eldred (in the promo video) describes as Master Built by Cruz. Additionally, the product description tab on that guitar also lists them as being master built, but no names or other details such as magnet type, rating, or what they were based on are mentioned.

I find that very sloppy. You buy a Custom Shop guitar thinking you'r getting something and it turns out that what you thought you got is not really what you got. For that kind of money, there sould not be any doubts, and Fender should make it clear - up front - what you are buying. It's not like it's a Mexican Strat!

I'm now having second thoughts on the PUs on this guitar, and were it not for the neck, I'd take it back to the store and get my money back. Oh, and another piece of sloppy work, was the inclusion of a care sheet for nitro coated guitars! It's not laquered in nitro, it's got a urethane coating on it!!

This has been my first experience with CS guitars, and so far I am not overly impressed. What are the PUs, and if they are Texas Specials, why are they not master built, and what is the difference between them??? Oh, as an aside, the customer service guy was very helpful, and he went so far as to give me his email address and asked me to post my questions and he would see if he could get them answered by Eldred. We'll see what comes of that.

Update: Fender called me today as Mike Eldred replied to the email that I sent to them. It turns out they are in fact CS master design and the confusion over Texas Special stems from the inventory sheet which lists them as Texas Special when in fact it is just the bobin and one other part than comes from the Texas Special that was used in the making of them. Still don't know what they are based on though

Look yes, play, well I had to take it back to the shop to have it set up, so not so much. The strings were buzzing quite bad. When I was in the shop trying it out I was picking quite lightly and didn't notice anything. But over the last couple of days it became apparent that something was not right with it.

The action is great, so it shouldn't be buzzing, and by great I don't mean that it is super low, cause it's not. So, once at the shop they confirmed what they see as the problem: the neck is bowed in the centre. Not sure how that happened, as I have only had it four days. It sat in the shop for the past two years. Not sure if it happened on Fenders' end or from hanging on the wall for two years (which might explain why it didn't sell). So they are going to flatten the excess bow in the neck and raise the saddles as I told them that I like the action the way it is. I suggested that it might also be the nut, but who knows.

How does it sound? I find the PUs to be a bit hot, but it is a little bit difficult to tell with the strings buzzing, as that could also give the impression that the PUs are overly hot. Something tells me that I'll be changing them out for CS69s. I didn't buy it for the PUs though, they can be changed easily. And the ones that are in there now are based on Texas Specials, which are hotter than CS69s. Initially, it was the look that caught my eye. In fact, I didn't even realize that it was coated with urethane until I got it home. The grain in the two piece premium ash body is really something else, but it is the neck that is the piece de resistance, and even the techs at the repair shop were marveling over it. Both the fret board and the neck are covered in birds eye from end to end, and it feels like polished marble. It is the finest neck that I have ever put my hands on, and that is what really sold me on it - though it does sound really good too, obviously. Hopefully they will be able to fix the bow. This is my second Strat. The first one, an American Deluxe also had a problem with the neck, so bad in fact that they had to replace it. Turned out the truss rod was installed incorrectly.

Oh, and I didn't go into the store with the slightest intention of buying a CS Strat. I went in thinking I might buy the 2013 American Deluxe V neck, or maybe an artist rendition. When I saw it I didn't know it was a CS model as it was hanging with all of the other models priced in the $1600-$2000 range. For a CS it's relatively inexpensive enough with the retail price being $2825, but the store had knocked $400 off it putting it in a range that I could make a quick decision on. I doubt I would have bought though had I known about the bow in the neck.

It is not a problem on Fender's end.

Necks bow due to changes in temperature and humidity from just sitting around. Simple adjustment of the truss rod. You should have insisted on a complete setup before the guitar left the shop. If they did set the guitar up initially, they didn't do a very good job of it.

"If they did set the guitar up initially, they didn't do a very good job of it" They who, the shop? If that is the case, no, they don't do it like that. They offer you a free complete set up within a year of purchase, but the decision to do that is yours. Not all guitars need it, regardless of how long they have been hanging around. I bought a out- of-the-box (so I was the first person to touch it from Fender) 52 Hot Rod Tele in December 2011 (from the same store), and it is still rock solid, with no set up. Alternatively, I bought a out-of-the-box Martin 00028 from the same store, and the action was, as they say it today's parlance "way huge", so it needed to be set up. Having purchased a bum Strat the first time (the neck needed to be replaced because the truss rod was installed incorrectly) I am not so quick to excuse Fender. As for if this is an easy fix. I'll hold my breath and hope that it is, because I like the guitar.
