Due to the iminent arrival of a baby I am looking to downsize my guitar collection and I am faced with something of a dilema.

Currently I have 13 guitars of which I only play 5 regularly and so I have conculded that I only need a strat, a tele, a les paul, an acoustic and a bass.

At the minute I have two strats, 1 2008 standard and an upgraded mexican 60s and two teles a 52 hot rod and a 72 AVR.

I am thinking of ordering a teambuilt strat and tele.

The strat would be a very similar spec to my american standard and the tele would by very similar to the current american standard.

Do I order the custom shop strat and tele.

or

Keep my standard, which I am very happy with, buy an american telecaster standard and order a Jazzmaster.

Both options would cost me about the same amount of money.

So the question is, is ordering team built a significant upgrade over american standards?

The answer to your question would be...yes, a Team Built is a significant upgrade from and American Standard, but also that is reflected in the cost. I can understand your desire to "thin the herd" and get fewer, but better, but you will probably plough back all you make on the sale of your guitars to get the replacements...and maybe more besides.

Far be it from me to dissuade anyone from buying a Custom Shop guitar, as I'm very much a fan, but I wonder if it might not be better to put the idea on hold a little while until after baby arrives, and you and your lady have got settled into parenthood! You will be facing some extra costs that you don't have at present! :)

I had a similar dilemma a few years ago, after a house fire. So luckily that year, the Fender Custom Shop had their "Custom Deluxe" series for both Strats & Teles with exactly the features I was needing, so I ordered both. They look like brother & sister and they'll be the last two I ever need.
