Hi there.

Have come into possession of what appears to be a Japanese made "JD" model Telecaster, from what I've been able to determine this is the Japanese version of the custom shop Jerry Donahue signature Tele. It has the bound body and the 5 position selector switch, the bridge plate with the 3 brass saddles and a black, eight screw pickguard (with white laminated between 2 black layers). However it is lacking the JD initials on the headstock and the serial number is on the underside of the neck right next to the body at the neck base. Furthermore the serial number appears to be from 1989 / 90 or 1990 / 91, which from what I understand is prior to the JD model being available. There is no serial number on the bridge plate, it just says "Fender pat pending 12701". Also the neck doesn't seem to be the "shallow V" profile that everyone mentions, although I can't be sure because I have nothing to compare it to.

I suppose it's possible that it's a genuine JD model that has had the neck swapped out - the different settings on the five position switch seem to clearly correspond to the various tone descriptions I've read and as I understand it the V profile was not to everyone's liking - but in that case why is there no serial on the bridge plate? Or it might be a mock JD cobbled together from various parts. Or it's an out and out fake. However it was in fact purchased at a reputable dealer (12th Fret in Toronto) in 1995, according to the receipt.

Incidentally, it sounds terrific and is wonderful to play. I'm not looking to sell it or anything, am just curious about it's history.

Any thoughts / insight would be most appreciated.

Thanks

Too early to be a JD model
at the base of the neck it should be mentioned "made in Japan"
the serial number should be on the bridge plate
Might be a Part O Caster
