yes, they both were todd built. at first i thought they were just prototypes or something but the GC's confirmed they were actual guitars from the run that would be going to different homes (i.e. not even buyers from that particular GC, for example)

Just like buying a cat in a bag...
To buy a guitar masterbuilt by Todd is rather safe, but still ...
they'll turn demo guitars very quickly...

Let's face it....At the end of the day, it's basically a business project for Fender and Guitar Center with a side benefit to the guitar aficionados with the capital enough to engage in it.There's a significant difference here between the handling of these guitars and the Yuri's which were build for the Russian market. [Alain will understand the subtlety of what I'm saying here.] At the 2011 auction preview in Manhattan, it was 'look but don't touch'.
Clapton's T-Mobile guitar, a really beautiful piece, sold at around $15K, as is. For all intents and purposes, each one of these repros should be treated as a 'one-off' for the individual store it is being offered at, and once out packed and displayed, no one should be permitted to handle that guitar until the eventual buyer claims it. What the hell, it is what it is..."You can please some of the people some of the time. You can please some of the people all of the time. You can't please all of the people all of the time."

Dear All,
I have been away, now i'm back for another run to one of these fabulous tribute guitars that Fender and artists so graciously offer.
I am gunning for one of these Brownies, so I went to my local store GC and setup the credit on account. They let me see the instrument and weigh it but never played it. Afterwards the guitar was safely placed back in its case and into its box.
I don't think the guitar was particularly heavy, but was really amazed by the level of detail in this repro. The neck felt smooth to my palm as I touched, and while it's a 56 which is thicker than a 57, it felt thiner than your normal 56 or 54 neck. The case is beautiful and so is the COA.
Later this month they had a Platinum night where one of the master builders, not gonna say who, but he's in my top 3 list, went for a demonstration and played the guitar... which I'm totally fine with... With the exception of that MB, NO else has touched it or played it and according to the GC Manager... THEY are NOT supposed to...
My two cents, and FYI, to misquote one of my favorite Seinfeld Episodes... "It's real, and it's fantastic". Hope I get to be one of the 50 lucky ones here in the states that snatches one of these honeys...
Stay Cool Brothers...
M.

welcome back!

unfortunately, you have no way of knowing if 'your' brownie is going to be the one udner lock and key that you saw - - or the one that i and others have been able to demo pretty thoroughly, for example.

its just a crappy process and way to handle what should be a collectible instrument.

what was the neckwear like on the one you saw? the two that i took a look at were not nearly as dark or worn as the original.

good luck in 48 hours!

Hey thanks for the welcome...
Well I know probably I won't know, but the guys at GC are bending over backwards to ensure THAT ONE is the one I get, fingers crossed. The finish on the neck was spot on with respect to the original... I mean you understand as spot on as it can get. But again the lighting plays tricks on the eyes, depending on the angle the photos were taken...

Ditto...It was disappointing to get email returned 'undeliverable'. Continued to hope that all was well with you. Now we have the benefit again of your valuable contributions. With respect to the on-going discussion, I am dismayed at the uneveness with which this project is being handled and glad to learn that, in some quarters at least, the guitar is being protected. In the spirit of your favorite Seinfeld episode, I certainly hope you get your hands on one.

Like I said, the situation that two places of GC where the guitar was allowed to be touched, really surprised me cause I've worked with GC before and had never come across a similar situation, so like I said, I hope these two are isolated incidents... Thank you Doc, I couldn't reset my account, but after doing so I'm back here with you guys, whom I missed by the way, my apologies for the returned emails, that will never happen again...
Warmest regards,
M.

well, i know that my two GC locations arent the only ones - as other forums i visited had memebrs post of their own first hand 'touching' :) of brownies that were local to them.

thats actually how i even knew to see if my GC had one in - the thought literally never even crossed my mind that one could just walk in and a Brownie would be there.

They were there for the platinum nights for the master builders to show the instrument and explain its features... I don't mind the touching... I mind the playing though...
It's very sad that such situation has happened and like I said, I hope am lucky enough to just take the one the guys at my local gc have...

The most I did at Hallandale was to put my hand around the neck whilst the guitar remained on its stand in the display. I wanted to get a sense of how it compared to a 10/56 neck, or EC's description of it as 'chunkier'. I did not want to take it down. I find your geographic opportunity of attending a presentation given by masterbuilders a coup. No 'fox and sour grapes' of course, but that speaks again to the uneveness of this endeavor.

I don't think there's anything wrong with that... as long as there's a watchful eye that makes sure, the potential customer, doesn't play it... Eric has been heard to say in the auction book where he discusses blackie, that brownie was more industrial guitar, less refined, refering to the neck which was actually chunkier... but I don't find it terribly chunkier, I actually liked it cause I don't particularly like the regular 56 necks... because of the wear, this feels different... One of the things I love about it is the solo trading by EC with Duane Allman in both the Layla Album and some of All Things must pass GH record...
