It was during the "From the Cradle" era the Olympic White EC Standards/Customs were introduced!

Eric toured with the so-called ''From the Cradle" Strat for nearly 2 years before switching to the Mercedes Blue in June of 1996.

Clapton owned another Olympic White Strat with Texas Special pickups and passive electronics which became the template for the aforementioned guitar.

The Strat in question was used during the recording sessions of the Tribute to Jimi Hendrix "Stone Free" in 1992. Clapton admitted he was not satisfied with the results he got declaring he liked the Lace Sensors over the Texas Specials.

That guitar had been probably used on several studio sessions but never on stage.

so, i checked out two different brownies at two GC's.

man, they were quite heavy for strats! neck had really high shoulders - not put off too much by the depth of the neck but the shoulders were definitely there. i was also suprised how the neck edges were not rolled at all, they were fairly sharp. i know Krause generally rolls his edges so i am assuming the original must be like that.

sounded and played REALLY good. prototypical spank and twang.

here is whats weird - apparently all these brownies that are in the GC's are the ones that are being sold in the lottery system...so, if one were to pull the trigger on this, their 15k masterbuilt replica is getting pawed over for the next month at some random GC?

doesnt that seem pretty sh*tty?

I'm surprised they actually let you handle it. Not so in Hallandale FL. At least when I was there two weeks ago.

yeah, both locations offered it to me without my even asking - one of them plugged me in. i know from others on the various forums that there is a lot of demoing (though, that would be using the term loosely since i know a lot of these people are not necessarily interested buyers) going on across all the GC locations.

i dont know if it will be a driving factor for me not to purchase - but i definitely really dislike this aspect of the current situation!

Well writ. IMHO those guitars should be in a 'no hands on' policy, purchased solely on the basis of their exclusivity and collectability. $15K plus tax for a guitar which the tourist trade [nothing personal here] is sampling solely for having been able to say 'they played it', is a bummer. For all intents and purposes the guitar is now deemed 'used'.

What was the situation when you acquired the Mayer?

both mayers that passed my way were completely boxed/sealed and had not been taken out. certainly, not hanging out, unprotected on a GC wall, and available for demos for over a month before they were sent to me.

the whole idea just seems weird to me. i cant think of anything else that has worked like that. i did not purchase Blackie but i would guess those were sent directly to buyers (either from fender or GC), bypassing the month-long open storage for demoing purposes that seems the Brownie tribute fate.

Likely more to do with the marketing hype for the other two guitars, displaying them as a trio without consideration for the integrity of the pieces or caring about the prospective buyers.

So said the saleperson in Hallandale. I question if I was a potential buyer but didn't offer to take it off the wall. I would have been surprised had he done so.

see, thats the thing...even if a particular GC restricts the publics ability to play the guitar, i guarantee the guitar is making the rounds with everyone that works in tha GC.

Don't know what's come to pass since 3 weeks. He was just setting up the display in the Platinum Room, waiting on the other two guitars. I doubt that any amount of handling is going to keep the buyer who pulled the trigger from walking out with the guitar.

ah, my friend, that is true - they are not nearly as OCD as me :)

did i tell you how heavy they were also? surprisingly so...i know neither Brownie or Blackie are light by modern standards but i was still really surprised (particularly with the first one i handled)

Wonder did they weigh the original's body when they spec'd it out?
