Does anyone know if the Fender Custom (Shop) 60s pickups have the larger .197 diameter magnets used in the pre CBS era, or the smaller .187 diameter magnets used in the mid-60s (and beyond)?

I tried to measure them myself, but it's too difficult to discern differences of .01" using a tape measure, especially with the beveling.

Anyone know?

Thanks!

I just measure the magnets on my 2004 CS 1960 Strat, and my caliper reads 0.187".

Not sure exactly when they switched from the 0.2" diameter, but I thought it was in the mid 50s (like '55 or so), not mid 60s.

Thanks for the info.

It could have been earlier than the mid-60s. There's mixed info online about exactly when fender switched magnet diameters, partly because there was a good amount of variance back then. I've heard of vintage strats having different diameter magnets even within the same pickup.

Thanks again.

You made me curious so I checked three CS Strats - a '56, a '61, and a Dick Dale model (all from the last 5 years), and they all were 0.187.

Interesting that a '56 would have .187, everything I've read suggests they were .197 in the 50s (and possibly up until early 60s)...
