I recently ordered a CS version of the Am Dlx Strat, with a few "personal" variations. It seems most CS models are typically to vintage specs, aside from the Custom Classic.

Has anyone else had the CS build what is essentially an Am Dlx (with or without variations), and if so how did it turn out? Are you happy with it?

When the Am Dlx was brought into the market, I inquired about a V-neck option. At the time, the company was not so inclined. Having played Stratocasters for the better part of 50 years I decided it was time for me to stop waiting on the company for what I wanted. The guitar they built for me is basically an EC finished like an SRV, i.e. 25db midboost but with SCN pickups and a 5-way switch; V-neck, rosewood board, medium jumbo frets, vintage gold hard ware and bridge with blocked tremolo; black-tri-lam pickguard with 8 screw holes, black controls and pickup covers; the body and neck finished like the SRV guitar. It is a well-built, great to play instrument.

If a consumer shops carefully, one can find a well done piece, off the production line, in every price point. However, you may have to kiss a lot of frogs along the way.

Personally, when I shop guitars, I audition them in the store, but I never buy a guitar off the wall unless it's really something unusual. I consider these victims of the headbanger's practice sessions "used" instruments. I place the order and on delivery, insist on opening the box myself, in the store.

Its interesting to note that, over the years, some of my ideas have actually found their way into production. I had thought of doing a hardtailed Jazzmaster/Jaguar with humbuckers. That's now a reality.

My next project will likely be a hardtailed version of one of the current production guitars.

As with the Am Dlx, I recently inquired as to whether the Custom Shop would do a VG Strat with a V-neck. I was told that the shop is NOT building VG guitars at this time. My guess is that they are waiting to see if this guitar "takes off"...the juice being worth the squeeze. We shall see. I've been watching this company since Strat's sold for $249 in 1958. You never know what's coming down the pike.

Rock on, dude!
