It's a Yuri and I'm sure it will be perfect. Though my preference on those SB3's runs to a more subtle blending of the red into the yellow...kinda' like the '57>'58 transition where they weren't exactly sure yet.

It wasn't that they weren't sure, it was that the red got eat up when it was exposed to sun light, Fender kept working with it until they found a mixture that worked. This was all in '58, and in '57, they were all meant to be and were 2-TSB, in other words they didn't start the 3-TSB until '58.

The '58 I knew came into our band sometime in '59, with a November '58 neck date. I acquired it 4 years later. It never had that defined band of red. It was a soft blend of brown, into red, into yellow. Go to www.guitarmotel.com and search '58 Custom Shop Stratocaster. This, according to Alain, is a period correct finish. That was my guitar's look.

In '58, Fender started working on the 3-TSB finish, it was intended to look just like Sikoniko's tele. The soft blend of brown, into red, into yellow that you refer to, was not intended, it was a result of the red paint pigment not being able to withstand sunlight, and being gobbled up by it, some times the red wasn't completely eat up, and the finishes have that subtle look you describe. By '59, Fender finally got a lasting 3-TSB finish.

I guess there's no accounting for tastes, but in another time and place, before we became enamored of phyically aged, and beaten guitar bodies, I sent my Strat out to CBS-Fender to be refinished.[..the famous Woodstock Summer]. On it's return, I gave it a double-take because it had the 3-TSB finish of which you speak. To add insult to injury, years later when I had the guitar appraised by the reputable Mandolin Brothers [ Staten Island, NY], they advised me that the body was not an original '58. It had been replaced...NOT...refinished. You may know [as in the case of the Gilmour Black Strat], that custom color finishes were often placed over existing sunbursts rather than starting from scratch. Well, according to my consultants, it was not uncommon for the company, at that time, to do the same for a refinish request. :? Alain has lovely examples of both the SB2 and SB3 in his collection, both of which suit my eye.

That sounds like something that CBS would've done, what eventually became of your guitar?

I sold it for $850 about 17 years ago.

That's terrible Doc, fortunately I've never had anything like that to happen to any guitar, sorry to hear about that.

We were not as 'in tune' [no pun intended] to FMIC as we are theses days. The CBS-Fender debacle is a matter of historical fact and, in retrospect, it is easy to understand how this came to pass. There were no such things as 'Showcase Dealers' back then. An 'authorized Fender repair center' could be nothing more than a local TV/radio repair shop bearing in mind how Leo started out.

My '62 FCS strat is like that. I have seen historically correct versions from many different pre-cbs strat/tele's that vary greatly in the red pigment in the 3tsb. I specifically asked for the red to be nice and thick and cheesy like this. something about it appeals to me. Can't wait to see how the birds-eye neck comes out! I asked for it to be some-what subtle.
