It had a finish exactly like the ash FSR Strats Fender is showing currently, a tortoise shell scratch plate. It was SSS with pole pieces, and described as having a 12db midboost. I remember searching high and low for one but never saw it on a wall. I've always speculated that Fender ultimately brought that idea forward and created the Powerhouse Strat
.

The guitar you're talking about was later upgraded with Lace Sensors and the boost increased to 25dB. It also sported a honey blonde finish over a lightweight ash body.

Fender had removed two resistors from the circuit to increase the gain to 25dB, got rid of the dummy coil and replaced the no-load pot with a TBX tone control.

The final design went into production in 1995.

I seem to recall that the first guitar had a much lighter finish because I was struck by the appearance of the LS guitar on the GP cover.

Oh, a signature Brownie as an LTD is also welcomed. Truly a nice pair!

It would be nice to see a 2-color-sunburst EC Strat. I know that Fender made a Buddy Guy Strat that was basically a 2-color-sunburst EC Strat.

Brownie was featured with an alder body, tabacco sunburst finish and 1-ply 8-hole scratchplate. Therefore an EC "signature" Brownie would have the specs described above.

The sunburst BG had the same Gold Lace Sensors and "Elite" electronics as the EC except for the addition of a lightweight ash body and a 4-ply 11-hole aged white pearloid pickguard.

Based upon what Eric had to say about the Brownie being a more industrial guitar, with a 'thicker, clubbier' neck. Absent the tobacco sunburst, this new American Vintage '56 Stratocaster might have all the 'vibe' for that guitar, and they may have just, when sitting around brainstorming this project of theirs, and without any fanfare about it, selected that year's model because it had an association with Eric Clapton. Without examining the guitar in Seattle, it's impossible to know the true nature of that guitar's neck carve.

In a personal anecdote, I have amongst my memorablia are two photos of a 'business acquaintance' of mine. In the first, he is holding Eric's Blackie. In the second he is holding both Blackie and the replica.[ I cannot share these with the Forum publicly for reasons of confidentiality.] His impression of the neck carve to me was that it was 'rounder' than the one on the Signature Series Strat which, from some of what I have read in other sources, is alleged to have been patterned after the v-neck on a Martin acoustic of Eric's. Revisiting Eric's quote..."They've done it with an element of safety. They've erred on the side of being functional." Alain could offer us a personal observation in that he owns a Blackie and a really fine Todd Krause Masterbuilt Signature Series guitar.

So the best thing to make a Brownie signature model is to:

- purchase a 2-tone burst AVRI 56 and put an EC neck on it.

- rout a cavity between the middle & neck pickups to fit the "Elite" PCB and another one on the back of the body to install a 9V battery.

- drop a set of Vintage Noiseless pickups with the TBX and MDX circuits prewired.

- replace the 3-way switch with a 5-way selector.

- block the trem with a chunk of alder and remove 2 of the 5 springs from the tremolo cavity.

Too much work :!:  Have the Custom Shop do a Team Built Tobacco Sunburst guitar on the Clapton platform if that's the electronics you desire. Only fit it with a 21 fret solid maple neck. They won't put his signature on it because it's not an authorized finish or neck, but who cares. I did that about 8 years ago and have described that guitar several times in these pages. It was swapped out for my Gilmour because I wasn't happy with the neck. I went for a 22 fret rosewood board and in discussing it long after the fact with one of the master builders he suggested that the requirements of the board likely had added thickness to the neck which prohibited getting the kind of taper I was used to on my '89 Pewter.

..or a 22 fret, if possible.

It's not R&D here mate. Here's is where dreams begin. It's there that they're reallized. The Custom Shop acts not only on the dreams, inspirations and ideas of its staff but those of its audience and customer base...."When You're Ready",

Sorry....no. It's a color photograph on pg 144 of the '04 Christies Catalog. He's on stage, to BB King's left, and Diana Ross is standing behind BB. It's at the Apollo Theatre in 1993. The notes specified that he was not playing the Apollo guitar in that performance.
