Or it would likely be a prototype - who cares? :?

I know what town he presently lives in. That's last place on the planet I'd expect to find a Fender Custom Shop prototype....in a Guitar Center Platinum Room, no less.

We expect seeing EC cradling an ECP Red onstage next year.

Might preface your remark with something like ..."I wonder if...."
Sounds more speculative than factual that way.

What did he use at the JJ Cale tribute gig last week? Only seen one photo which shows him with a 'dont know what', and no video footage so far.

* edit, ok just seen Chrome's post in The Lounge about the L5. Thanks.

The L5 Clapton played at the JJ Cale tribute show is actually different than the L5 he used to record I Wish It Would Rain Down with Phil Collins a couple of decades ago.

Image

We already know he played the L5 on the video; in reality the track was recorded with one of his "smoker" guitars.

Best,

M.,

You sure it was a Clapton? Did it have the sig on the back of the headstock, or did you happen to see the COA? It could have been 'just' a custom ordered Strat with a Clapton circuit, I've seen quite a few of those around....

Kind regards,
R.

BTW: I've been of the forum for a while. Did you get a chance to post a back-to-back comparison between the Brownie and Blackie Tributes somewhere here on these pages?

Masterbuilt EC Customs do not have the artist's signature on them.

This guitar is probably an ECP Red prototype which was (supposedly) built for Eric himself or - as Doc says - a special one-off commissioned by Guitar Center.

That is not true. EC's personal guitars don't have the signature on the back. If you order a Masterbuilt Clapton, you will get the sig, unless you specify that you don't want it.

I think your second remark is highly speculative.

Bobby1: This is an interesting twist. We have always been given to understand that the Masterbuilt guitar lacks the TBX in favor of a stock tone pot, AND the signature. That it is rendered 'as built for the artist'. Did you place an order wherein they advised you that the client must specify the headstock signature not be placed?

Very interesting, and curiouser and curiouser. I've emailed them and put a question to the guitar department as to the manner in which this guitar was ordered. I've also emailed an esteemed Forum member about this. I am looking forward to their replies.

The "Blackie" Bobby is talking about was crafted by Paul Waller.

This guitar has one of the nicest flamey museum-grade AAAA maple necks I ever seen! :P

The vendor has replied to my email and confirmed the signature and also advised that, by contract, the signature is obligatory. I am waiting to hear from alainlafrance about his 2003 TK built Clapton and whether or not it is signed, given the arrangements that were made for the build...'as built for the artist.'

Thank you for the clarification on the Masterbuilder. If one accesses the dealer's website, one can view Paul's signature on the COA as well. Had the pleasure of having a late supper in Manhattan with Paul Waller, Mike Eldred, and another colleague, when they came East for the Road Show atThe Music Zoo several years ago. Paul builds Buddy Guy's guitars.

P.S. In a followup email, the vendor states that he is going to touch base with the Custom Shop regarding this Clapton question.
