I agree with you on that, however also bear in mind that those Laces in 24 Nights went through a Soldano SLO100 and a Pete Cornish rack system, whilst the VN's just go through a '57 Twin.

It's also a matter of personal taste. The VN's sound much rounder, mellower. Laces are louder with more treble and have a glassier sound. I can imagine Clapton wanted something different just for the sake of having something different, after having worked with the Lace pickups for well over a decade.

I personally prefer the Laces, and think they pair better with the mid boost circuit. VN's + mid boost sound rather muddy to my ear.

Interesting. I've been given to understand that, for Eric, it was the other way around. Also the reason he ditched the TBX. Too muddy. I hear the Laces differently. Less glassy...more meat for that bluesy sound.

No, to my knowledge EC has never commented why he opted for the VN pups, nor has he ever spoken on the tonal differences of both pups. All I know is what ME has shared with us on this forum, which was that EC stated the Laces didn't work for him anymore. Subsequently Fender shipped several pickups to him to try, out of which he favored the VN pups.

If there is anyone out there with more/other/additional information from a reliable source I'd love to hear.

I wonder why he ditched Marshall in the first place. IMHO he sounded much better with a Marshall or a Soldano. As much as I love the guy's playing, I think his electric guitar tone has gone steadily downhill eversince the early nineties.

im ok with the twin but depends on the pairing...i'd take his 335/twin combo any day, even over the Cream setup (not necessarily the playing, just the tone).

but his midboost/twin combo can get a little fizzy and too loose for me - whatever keeps him going, though, im good with!

Over the years Clapton ran different amps to drive his Leslie cabinet.

During a rehearsal at Bray Studios in 1989 he used a Music Man head.

Actually, we all gained a great deal from the research we had to do on your project, and you wound up with an interesting, and all together different guitar in the end. Somewhere along the line I heard you had posted a pic of that TK built Custom. I've never seen it.

He was at the peak of his powers during that period.

But you're right, his tone became more streamlined after the 2nd half of 1992.

This is the sound that evolved from the introduction of the Lace Sensor active electronics. It lends itself to a very creamy, thick, well sustained and slightly over driven tone. Of course, it doesn't hurt to have Phil playing another Clapton Strat on the back line. This is the beer commercial arrangement of the song, which I happen to prefer over the up tempo recording on his first CD, and prefer to play myself. It gives more of a nod to its author.

Another shot from After Midnight filmed at the Shoreline Amphitheatre 2 years earlier.

The same Michelob beer commercial arrangement with the addition of the Dyno-My-Piano pedal into the mix.

Clapton did an extensive use of the Dyno-My-Piano until late 1989.
