If you want an approximation of the Blackie, have the Custom Shop build you a 21 fret '57 Stratocaster, with vintage contours and a deep offset waist cut; a solid maple neck, bleached; 7.5 radius' Clapton neck carve; vintage hard ware, 7.5 radius, 3-position selector switch. Have the guitar set up with the trem claw flush to the body rout which will bring the block into the same relationship in its position, with the bridge on the deck.[no wood block..The Blackie did not have one]; no trem cavity cover. Drop in a set of Custom Shop Fat 50's or, as suggested by Chromeface, the Lee Dickson Black Series [ Mojo Musical Supply...white and cream covers available]and you've got what Mike Eldred would call a pretty good snapshot of the guitar. ...

Yeah, that's pretty much the spec that would get you in the ballpark of the Blackie guitar. Personally, I'd cheat a little with the neck radius, get it a bit flatter to facilitate string bending. To my knowledge Blackie has since long had a 5 way switch, a useful "upgrade" since EC was very fond of the middle/neck (edit: that should be the middle/bridge!) position while still using Blackie. As for pups, Blackie had two 50's pups and one from 1970, so nothing fat or overwound for that matter. Therefore I would opt for a handwound classic 50 pup in favor of the fat 50's.

The notes in the '04 Christies auction quote Eric as saying that the inbetween sound [pos 4] on the new guitars does not have the same 'magic' as that on the Blackie. There's not much more on the electronics in that interview other than Dickson's observation that one of the pickups was a 70's [having been installed when he acquired that clutch of guitars] and the other two were 'old'.
I'd go with the Dickson Blacks [and leave the neck at 7.5 ]if I was looking to get really close to the vibe. Who else in addition to Eric would know the tone sought for that guitar? From my personal experiences playing a '58 for many years, that 'sweet' spot on the 3-way sounds a tad better to my ears than the wired 5-way. Can't explain why scientifically...just does...to me...anyway.

It could be argued that this album jacket started the whole craze for worn guitars. (It's certainly what started my love for them.) Gibson did a Beano LP Tribute using nothing more than 3 poor-quality pics and Eric's memories. There are lots of clear pics of Brownie from the early '70s and I presume Mr. C remembers how the neck felt at least as clearly as he remembers the Beano LP.

I suspect most people would rather have a recreation of Brownie during her glory days than a recreation of her present state, and Paul Allen wouldn't be involved at all.

IMHO it would not be very polite to make a reproduction of a guitar without prior consent of its current owner. As neither Clapton nor Fender has any formal connection to the guitar anymore it would not be a proper action to try to capitalize on it.

Didn't stop the Big G from replicating the 'Beano' album guitar

The Beano LP was stolen so Clapton is still the legal owner.

After thinking about it, I agree it would be unethical to do any sort of Brownie Tribute without Paul Allen's cooperation and regret suggesting it. And even though Allen's the owner and Clapton might not have any legal standing, it would be wrong to do it if Mr. C disapproved.

But if those two were open to the idea, I'd still rather see glory-days Brownie than worn-out-to-the-point-of-retirement Brownie.

Interesting anecdote in that it seemed that he was referring to the pickups in the Blackie and, at the time of the interview he had to have had the VN's in his new guitars for several years.

In the interview Eric states that the Blackie was a better guitar to play because the Brownie had a clubbier neck. He describes the Brownie as a more industrial guitar and the Blackie as more refined. He describes it as having the most extreme V on a maple neck that he had ever found. A beautiful neck with a lovely feel. The neck on the signature guitar is described as having been reproduced with an element of safety...having erred on the side of functionality.
P.S....IMHO...my favorite neck in the entire lot of Fender guitars.
