In fact EC has not approved the idea yet because the CS has not made the prototypes which eventually serve as a template for the final design, that's why the project couldn't start.

A prototype should be made and presented to him in order to obtain his own approval for the 2013 EC Red LTD.

seems to me 'project' would be grossly overstating any actual thought EC or fender ever had with respect to this.

i thought it was just an idle comment on the forum that i would be cool to see a new clapton in that color....or i have missed something that made it more 'real' than that?

I do not have any source, it's a simple opinion.

My apologies...

From prior years it appears that if Fender had an idea they would either put the question to him or workup a prototype and send it to him for evaluation. If he had one, he'd approach them with it. Either way, it's never been privy for public consumption to the best of my knowledge and belief. It just comes out of the blue.

Well, the first clips on YouTube of the March 14 show in Phoenix only show the trusty old EC Grey. No suprise entrance of a flashy SP12EPC red colored Strat... Don't think this project will come to pass...

...and with the Daphne Blue you'll get three lovely babies turning into huge, screaming blues monsters when their MDX pot is cranked to the max!

Does anybody have an idea why Eric moved from the Laces to the VN pickups? I had both and liked the Laces a lot better... are there any sources of info?

This question arises often. Mike Eldred advised us that Fender sent Eric a set of VN's to try out and he liked them better than the Laces. Why they did that? We don't know. All kinds of things go on in the corporate closet. Said to have sounded a bit brighter to his ear, which is also the reason why there is no TBX in his stage guitars. I clearly recall that when the Gold Laces were first introduced on the Strat Plus's they were said to have a perfect vintage Strat tone.[Hence 'gold'] Same with Bill Lawrence's SCN's introduced in 2004. After nearly 60 years of following and playing Fender, I've come used to the idea that everything new in their marketing becomes the best thing to come along since sliced bread.

Thanks Alain. This is really confusing to me as the Laces simply provide a broader tonal spectrum than the VNs, they just feel more inspiring and the tone rolls of like a dream. With regards to the TBX, I just heard that he didn't like the TBX with the VNs so he threw it out. Might be a rumour though. I also heard that the TBX pots changed between the mid 80s and the 2000s, having a different curve. Perhaps he threw them out for that reason.

And the Laces vs the VNs... well... take the tone from 24 Nights vs anything after 2000. No chance for the VNs to my ears!

I am not sure if the Lace Golds are available still. Didn't Lace reengineer them recently?

Now to the matter at hand. The understanding is that Clapton felt that the TBX did not give the pickups enough 'air' so to speak. With respect to the 'quest for tone', every ear is different. I always recommend Premier Guitar Magazine's excellent 3-part article 'The Psychology of Tone' when we get into these discussions. Where ever his ear was going, the VN's and the conventional tone pot were leading, notwithstanding what he heard in the past, or our preference for the Lace Sensors. Yes...they are still being manufactured as well as an extended line of pickups using that 'field comb' design. You can Google the product and find the website for further information. Added to the guitar, is the way his rigs are EQ'd. If you go to "Where's Eric", you'll find a link to gear and a listing of several tours he did, what he used, and how they were EQ'd, though not much is said about the ''57 Twin Amps". I tried to get a sense of those when I previewed the auction in 2010 in Manhattan, but I could not trust the settings I saw to be true.

The stage guitars he uses for the slide repertoire do have the TBX and Laces.
