A couple of years ago Fender released limited-edition runs of Eric Clapton's EC Grey and Daphne Blue Stratocasters. These finishes were chosen by Clapton to match his cars.

Recently Eric acquired a custom Ferrari SP12EC in a luxurious translucent red paintjob created as homage to his career and long lasting experience as a Ferrari owner.

Why not releasing a 2013 EC Custom LTD finished in the so-called "EC Red" finish to match his new acquisition?

If EC Grey was tad darker than Pewter, then EC Red would be tad darker than Torino Red.

I bet Eric will bring his new Custom Shop axe for the 4th Crossroads Guitarfest in April 12/13 of 2013.

Just an information. :)

There's a discussion about the aforementioned guitar on other forums. ZZDoc found that project interesting.

Wishful thinking never hurts. The color is not hard to look at. I expect that, if it happens at all, it will likely go the route of the previous two. First, a stage guitar and then, if the company sees a market for it, and EC agrees, an LTD.

Both TB and MB!

Oh, a signature Brownie as an LTD is also welcomed. Truly a nice pair!

Brownie would do better as a Tribute Strat but I don't know the interest in it. I've seen the guitar out in Seattle at the EMP. It looks beat to hell, a relic devotees piece of cake. Besides, I don't know that Paul Allen would be interested in having his prize duplicated. Seems to me it would have been done by now instead of the 'Lenny' which died on the vine.

The 'whys and wherefores' of that seems to be an interesting question for Eldred to followup on for us?

"Brownie" both in Tribute and regular signature versions.

The signature version would have the "modern" appointments favored by EC himself, just like the T-Mobile Guitar.

Currently Eric has not authorized having his signature model in Tabacco Sunburst yet.

Ach!! The T-Mobile guitar went for a song. [no pun intended] Had I been in my present situation then, I would have had a go at the bidding. Too many other priorities that season. :? :?

I think the Torino Red prototype (aka "August" Strat) got also a 22-fret neck with the boost maxed out at 25dB when Clapton sold it to cricketer Ian Botham.

Yeah, why not throw in a NOS version of the Blackie Tribute too! :)

That's a mongrel black Stratocaster cobbled together from best parts, in Eric's judgement, of a clutch of guitars he purchased, nothing more. IMHO, there'd be nothing in an NOS version of any significance. Very vanilla. The care worn "Blackie' and its history, is what it gave the guitar its charisma. The same would hold true for the "Brownie". A '56 sunburst NOS...nothing more. Everything clean, neat and pretty. Not at all like the charismatic relic sitting in the showcase at the EMP in Seattle. It's a tribute version of that one you want as well.

The 'NOS' production line versions of TBO sold resonably well... I can't see why there would not be some sort of demand of the Blackie guitar, new yet retaining its distinctive neck shape, pups and shielding. Give the fans a real Clapton model sans those active electronics.

Exactly, that's why I would appreciate a NOS Blackie, so we have a Clapton model without the active electronics.

Then again, you know Blackie had no active electronics because you have one of the Tributes stacked away in your vault, right? :D

The TBO and the Blackie Tribute projects are not parallel to each other.

The production Black 1 was not a Cruz guitar without the relic finish. It was, for all intents and purposes, a black finished version of the Artist Series JM with a few tweaks for the vibe. Any such attempt would have devalued the LTD 83's as collector's guitars and the same would hold true for the Blackie Tribute.

The Gilmour Project was a totally different concept. DG did not want a price point beyond reasonableness which is why they were not limited in numbers and why he gave his audience the option of either an NOS or relic. Sans that, he was not going forward with it.

If you want an approximation of the Blackie, have the Custom Shop build you a 21 fret '57 Stratocaster, with vintage contours and a deep offset waist cut; a solid maple neck, bleached; 7.5 radius' Clapton neck carve; vintage hard ware, 7.5 radius, 3-position selector switch. Have the guitar set up with the trem claw flush to the body rout which will bring the block into the same relationship in its position, with the bridge on the deck.[no wood block..The Blackie did not have one]; no trem cavity cover. Drop in a set of Custom Shop Fat 50's or, as suggested by Chromeface, the Lee Dickson Black Series [ Mojo Musical Supply...white and cream covers available]and you've got what Mike Eldred would call a pretty good snapshot of the guitar.

Failing that, get yourself a Classic series 50's Stratocaster in both Black and SB2, pull off the back plates, setup the action as previously described, swap out the stock pups, and you have the vibe at way less cost. It appears that the Vintage Reissue guitars are no longer available.
