Hi,

After much pinching of the old pennies I finally got a Gilmour Relic.

I'm curious as to how the neck is supposed to feel.

Is it "sticky" or "smooth"?

What do you recommend to get the "music store funk" off of the neck?

I'm having a hard time telling what the neck is supposed to feel like normally and I just want to get it back to new condition.

Thanks for the help up front!

I would say : it's smooth.
Just use soap and water to clean it and wipe it just after.
That will make it.

The NOS neck is a gloss finish and has a decidedly different feel from satin...which....to me....is more of a definitiion of 'smooth'.
What do you think of your guitar?? Juice worth the squeeze???

Thanks for the advice on the neck. I'll try that tonight.

And as for the guitar, it quite simply is the best guitar I've ever played or owned. I am very happy that I finally put down the coin for it. I've wanted one since they came out and it definitely worth the wait.

Ditto...got mine in Oct of '08, after listening to all the 'ooh's and aah's' coming through the Gilmour project thread which had been running over a year by then. Swapped out a CS Strat of mine for it. It felt right from the day I strapped it on.

I'm glad that you were able to get a guitar you love. I'm sorry to say I wasn't that impresed by it. It could have been an off day for me, but I just wasn't that impressed.

Having said this, I do believe that guitars are very personal objects and as individual as the player.

I'm curious, what do you love about this guitar? Tone, feel, or anything else that makes it special to you.

First off, it's a Stratocaster. Having said that, one has to accept the fact that no two instruments coming off the line are going to be exactly alike. It's really an intangible quality. Tonal colorations aside, mine just 'felt right' on m shoulder and still does. The neck is that '57VRI' [sorry...that's what they called it]that Fender built for the guitar back in the 80's. It's has thin shoulders which offers a better feel to my hand that the so-called 'modern C'. I'm not a fan of gloss finish, but that's the guitar. The bridge pickup in this guitar is killer.

I completely agree with you that even the same guitar models can come off the line differently. I love my Clapton Strat, but I've others that didn't really impress me much. Usully its the neck and/or tonal differences that effect my judgement.

I played about 4 or 5 50th Anniverdary Series Strats (all of which left me cold) before I played mine and knew that IT was THE guitar I wanted.

So, other than soap and water, what other methods are recommended to clean the funk off of my Gilmour neck?

I'd suggest some guitar cleaner/polish rather then soap and water,

I tested some Gilmour relics and indeed the neck was a little bit sticky, so keep on playing until the finish gives up in a few years :D

Sound: it's a pity that Gilmour relics are not so good balanced and they are a little "covered" in the highs.

so long,

Connor

Not clear on your meaning of this. If your talking 'tone', the man himself has given his stamp of approval to the reproduction and even used those guitars in performance. Minor variations from guitar to guitar will exist in production but unless one has access to a vendor with a stock of these its unlikely that several could be auditioned at the same sitting.
