The Closet-Classic Relic is the BEST relic that I've ever experienced on an instrument - it just feels like you're playing the instrument since many years and new crackles don't hurt from the beginning

I'm a little lost. I thought we can choose not to buy something we don't like, no? :?:

+1
My '63 Closet Classic Tele also happens to be the nicest playing guitar I've ever played.

Not my cup of tea, but some of them look amazingly authentic. I would never do it, but it's not my money. There's obviously a market or the CS wouldn't bother. If there's a demand they'd be crazy not to fill it.

Sometimes people make me scratch my head. You're complaining that the company is giving people what they want? Hell, this thing has trickled down to the "Roadworn" series it's so popular. SO not only has Fender given their more elite customers an option they were obviously looking for, but they've also tried to bring it to the average player in a production run they can afford. How in the heck could that be bad?! If more companies operated that way it'd be awesome.

I'll be the first to admit that I get miffed when Fender releases "vintage" style instruments with obnoxious things like modern fretboard radius. There are many of us who would love an accurately spec'd out RI without having to pay through the nose for it. Obviously from a business standpoint, though. Radius isn't something most bassists complain about so it's likely a lot cheaper to pump a bunch of necks out with the Standard dimensions. Sucks to be me, but that's what the market bears.

At least, I know that in a few more years I'll hopefully be in a place to go to the CS and get the bass I really WANT made for me. I think it's great you can get such personal treatment from a major corporation in this day in age.

Well, at least with musical instruments we can. The government hasn't completely jacked that up yet. Give them time, though.

I choose to own a Relic Lake Placid Blue 64 Jazz Bass with Matching Headstock because it's the most comfortable and best sounding bass to me.
I choose to drink Merlot or Guiness because it's the best tasting drink to me.
I choose to do the Hokey Pokey because.....well you get the picture....
If it feels good do it.

My question is: What happens if you get your relic home... and add scratch to it.

Since it wasn't done at the custom shop is it now damaged?

I think this is one reason people like this style, if it does get dinged up, it's not as disturbing as one ding on a NOS style guitar.

Fully agreed
They are easy playing guitars.

I'm fairly sure that you can order a relic with that broken in feel and a worn out old looking finish without a crazy amount of scratches. That's what I plan to do.

Here's Mine (again), I could have done without the scratches but it's still a player and looker. Master-built by Dennis.

I'm planning to order a non-masterbuilt guitar with a color over color finish and I want a lot of the color on the bottom layer to be showing but I don't really want it to be scratched and dinged up or have any exposed wood. I don't really know how to request that. I really liked the look of the Jason Smith custom finishes with the solid color over the paisley finish but I don't want the dings and finish cracking on the top coat. I included a picture. I only want a solid color finish as the bottom color layer but I want that amount of the finish showing.

My fender dealer suggested that I specify that I want a color over color finish then just add the specifics to the additional notes section on the order form but I'm not too confident that they will actually follow through on that. I'm not even sure that the building teams are shown the sheet or if they're just told to do the finish without the specifics. I'm starting to think that I need to go masterbuilt to get that relic look without the damage marks.
