I hear a belief system crashing

That's why Relic is the easy way

I wrote this totally "tongue in cheek" as it is really no more an issue, to me, than Relic finishes! Over the course of the years, there have been "umpteen" threads on numerous forums panning relics, and the Custom Shop for producing them. In most cases, on most forums, those threads have been killed, as the issue got more and more heated. For some reason, the people who really don't like relics become quite vociferous in their dislike, and people who do like their relics get riled up because of that.
Everyone has the right to like or dislike any product, but sometimes the dislike for Relics can start to get downright disrespectful... and that's something that's best avoided!

And Alain is right! Black looks best when Reliced! :)

The custom shop builds people whatever they want. Somebody wanted that. Is it really a difficult concept to understand? I don't get why people get so angry about relics. What do you care? Everythings available in brand spanking new NOS finishes as well, there's something for everybody.

This one is for sale at GTR.com, so I don't think it was a special order. If it was, then whoever ordered it changed his/her mind . . .

I'm certainly not vociferous. It's more amazed at the whole phenomenon, although I was a bit taken aback with the price. It's true that it has no effect on my physical well-being. Just for comparison, I went through the guitar builder on Warmoth.com and came up with something really beautiful, at least as I'd define it, for less than $2000. And that was with nearly every high-end option I could add. But others may not wish to be seen dead with what I designed (flame red burst on quilted maple, Strat body, gold hardware, ebony fretboard).

One other accusation I've read on the late Ed Roman's site is his claim that a lot of "signature", etc., instruments use mediocre, if not cheap, parts and have inferior workmanship. I realize he could be somewhat over the top, but I believe he raises some valid points. My view is that if a guitar is going to have anyone's name on it, I'd want it to be mine.

I got a nice Jackson about 6 months ago. It usually went for about $1000, but it was "b-stock" and was $500 off. Why was it "b-stock"? It had a tiny scratch on the body near the neck pocket. If it hadn't been pointed out I'd never have noticed it. Otherwise it was in perfect condition and came with a full factory warranty.

How would this work on "reliced" instruments? How would anyone know what is an intentional flaw and an unintentional one? It seems as if it's a great way to bury the whole matter. If a body has a scratch on it, just put a lot more on it, called it "reliced" and double the price. I have no way of knowing if it happens this way or not, but it could be interesting to find out . . .

Oh yeah, what is "reliced"? Is it a relapse of crabs or something similarly unpleasant?

What happens if you try a Relic and accidentially hit a wall or something with it?

Questions after questions.

Cheers

That is nonsense. No integrity, and we paint the Relics differently anyway.

You may want to spend some time here: http://www.fendercustomshop.com/index.php/master-built/

And, watch the nine videos on that page that explains in detail how and why we do things. I think it may help you have a better understanding of the FCS. Also, we are a built to order shop for the most part except for limited editions etc. That Black Tele was an order for either that store or somebody else. It may have been cancelled and sold to that store or something. It all seems a bit much (if you ask me) to continue this discussion to be honest.

We say in Germany: "jedem Narr gefällt seine Kappe" what means " each fool likes his own cap"

Sure, some relics look like no real guitar would look like after 50 years of intensive playing but we do make cars in Germany or Italy which have 750 horsepowers and could go a speed of over 200 miles per hour on a regular highway and they sell good as well

Whether it's full of exotic woods and inlaid to the hilt or it looks like it's been rode hard and put up wet they are custom built instruments and come with a lofty price tag. No matter which end of the custom spectrum they are on I prefer to think more of the music that is made with them. SRV's Number 1, Clapton's Blackie or Rory Gallagher's Strat weren't the most visually beautiful guitars in the world but the music that was created with them was simply amazing!

The Master Builders put a lot of thought and work into the relic process. Ask John Cruz how much work he put into making all the SRV Number 1 replicas, or all the Master Builders who worked on the Blackie replicas. I know they would school you on the subject.

"Chacun a son gout"....right Alain?

The world would be less cool without the Custom Shop and their black relics.

I have a Squier Affinity Telecaster that I throw in the back seat of my 200 HP Ford Edge and do 60 mph on the highway.

That Warmoth prices is also for an unassembled instrument, as I've built a few this way myself. While I'm no expert, it does take several hours to "assemble" a guitar properly, even with all the parts available. And while you are paying a premium for FCS guitar, you are also paying for the quality and craftmanship that the Fender Custom Shop provides.

Wow, why are so hostile? :?
Maybe this got lost in translation.
He never said he owns a car like that, nor that he is rich. I guess he was more like, "nobody really needs these cars, but people buy them." Same as some of the more odd looking relics. As long as there is a market, people will build them. I don't think the link is so hard to understand.
