$4320 for this? Add 2 grand and you get one that looks like it was dragged out of a fire. This "relic" fad is getting out of hand. It used to be a vintage guitar was worth more for being in good condition, now the new ones cost more if they look like they've been dragged behind a truck with a chain on a gravel road!

Is that supposed to simulate extreme buckle rash, or sliding around the bed of a pick-up without a case?

The only relic I appreciated was the acoustic Willie Nelson played. He had strum holes worn in the front and names carved in it all over.

You don't like, you don't buy.
As simple as that.
Still, the presents odds seem to be against you,

Looks like a custom order, so it would have been requested that way.

I"ve often said so myself. But I'm making a statement about the current state of the guitar business. What does it say about the industry when this is perceived to be what people will pay big bucks for?

So, if somebody requests a REALLY beat up guitar with extremely relic'ing on the back or neck or whatever...we should not build it?

That people like 'em and do pay for 'em?

It's just a finish.

I don't like sunbursts and natural wood finishes. So I don't buy 'em.

So I don't have to buy a white Jaguar if I don't like it? I'll definitely sleep better tonight. Thanks!

I'd be curious to find out how their marketing people came upon the idea to sell them in the first place. Was there already a demand they perceived and are now working to fill it, or did they approach it with the "build it and they will buy" philosophy?

It seems to run counter to everything I've always encountered regarding true vintage instruments, that the better their condition, the greater their value. Is there any other product with a collector's appeal that can become more desirable by deliberately "trashing" its appearance? It certainly doesn't apply to cars, antique furniture or jewelry. I don't see it being the case for amps, or other instruments like violins, pianos, etc.

It goes a bit beyond the "you don't like it you don't have to buy it" question . . .

People pay all sorts of money for Picasso's stuff. I've always found this astounding as I think it all looks like a 3 year old's scribblings at best. I'll never understand the whole relic thing either. To me, both of are utterly ridiculous. Notwithstanding, if there are people out there who are willing to pay megabucks for a Picasso or an intentionally damaged new guitar with intentionally corroded hardware, why not? After all, no one is twisting their arm and to them it evidently worth it for whatever reason(s). Obviously, I have absolutely no desire for either aside from if either were handed to me free, I'd promptly sell it for as much as I could get for it from the ilk who desire such things. "One man's junk..." and all that.

As always, this is merely IMO where YMMV.

There's not a lot wrong with the guitar in question...apart from it being in black!

Just don't get me started on black guitars!
