. Did you actually handle such a guitar without the CS logo on the back of the headstock? If so, I'd send the serial # to Fender Consumer Relations and ask for the specs on that build.

It had the CS logo and EC signature on the back of the headstock, I am assuming 'mercedes blue' very dark blue and Gold Lace Sensors.

You just confirmed my first reply. The VN's were not in use by him yet.

Apologies. I've done some additional research due something that was nagging me about 2001. That WAS the year the VN's went in. To further your question you'd have to source the guitar's build history. Quirky things come out of the factory not in line with usual production. Sorry for the mislead. Chromeface is good on his chronology and, across the almost 10 years of these forums we have gone over these timelines often. 8) 8)

No problem I appreciate advice and opinions, and people sharing knowledge. I will try and dig up some more info.

Probably a custom order spec'd with LS, which you could still do then (may even still be able to, don't know).
I did that with a couple of lefty EC Strats ('05 and '07). Told them I wanted LS instead of VN.

Thanks for confirming that it was still an option to have lace sensors fitted back then in 06 on CS orders. It is not an option presently.

A search of that guitar's order/specs referencing it's V# to Fender Consumer Relations would be of interest to this discussion. That guitar should also have a COA. If signed by Mike Eldred it's a keeper. Mike's hard fast an up and coming blues power.

When referring to Clapton's stage guitars, all bets are off. You never know what he's keeping on a back burner. I have another thought but it will have to wait until later in the day for me to check out a source.

OK...I checked my Clapton Auction catalogs to see if there was a Mercedes Blue guitar such as that seen in the photo. None found. Now I'm a tad confused about the photo you've included. 1996 was still within the Lace Sensor period. I'm going to give you some out takes from the interviews with Clapton and Dickson from the '04 Crossroads Catalog regarding 'keynote' guitars of his which were sold:

-the first black guitar was built by Mark Stevens in 1988. It was his main stage guitar between 1990-1993. Has the signature on the face of the headstock, and cigarette burns. It's referred to as the last of the smoker guitars.

-a black guitar built by Larry Brooks around 1996 served as one of his main guitars between 1998-99. Dickson remarks that he would have two or three traveling with him. At this time, Eric's request to the builder was 'no signature on the headstock'

Given the date on the video, we may be looking at one of these and, the lighting may be giving it more of a 'blue' look than black
] "It's difficult to say which guitar was used for each specific thing" "They were always made to look as uniformly similar as possible." ....Dickson

The headstock on that guitar is definitely not signed. That on the guitar Andy is playing, appears to be, though the image is not clear.
Your 2006 date of interest is a decade hence from your sample image.

In the catalog is a guitar named the Rainbow Rod. It is of a bluish hue. It was built in 2000 by Tod Krause. It was finished in Dupont Chromalusion paint of the same color as that of a 1932 Ford Model B roadster that Clapton and BB King were using during the making of 'Riding With The King" in California. The pickups are vintage
noiseless. So that should give you a timeline on the change over.

Hope these miscellaneous ramblings have been of some help.

Doc

Hey Doc,

Lots 39 and 44 from the 1999 auction - described as "Black/Green" but with footnotes with more detail. Those are the original "Mercedes Blue" guitars like the one used at Hyde Park 1996 where the photo is from.

Interesting. Please expand on this.

Other than what's in the auction catalogue (1999) I don't really have anything to add. From your post I figure you have that catalogue? If not maybe I can type some of the notes up here.
