Interesting that you view is the direct opposite of Clapton's. The perception of tone is a psychological one. A series of three articles on this appears the 2010 Premier Guitar. You can search their archives on line for The Psychology of Tone.. The other thing we've never been priviledged to, and I've cited this numerous times in prior discussions is exactly how Clapton EQ's his sound system. That might account for his preference because the raw signal from the guitar has to be turned into something else by something else. Remember..he also works wireless most of the time.[/quote]

Check the Live at Budokan DVD if possible. EC plays one of the Crash Strats equipped with the VN's, but for the encore he brings out the fan Goldleaf guitar which has the Lace's. You can clearly hear the Lace equipped Goldleaf sounds louder with more mids and much more treble. Where the Crash sound a tad muddy and dull the Goldleaf positively screams. I do not think any adjustments were made in amp settings and so just for the encore. My personal experience with these pups is exactly the same as what can be heard on that DVD.

Triamps impressions of the Lace Sensor's mirror mine. As far as changes in EQ are concerned...Clapton has done that himself, adjusting the tone pots and the pickup used for a particular song. Then there's the master sound board which you never see. If the guitar sounds different likely it's been EQ'd differently.

Save yourself the money and buy an early EC is my call. Mine is stamped "HECTOR MONTES" who ended up working for the Custom Shop anyway... I've had both the VNs and the Lace and prefer the Lace especially in conjunction with the boost. The VNs have their upsides too however.

+1!

He has his Samson wireless packs attached into his guitar straps!

Playing wireless onstage allows him walking out behind the scene without worrying about guitar cables. Eric did this in the early 1990s while performing a couple of blistering solos (Bad Love, Tearin' Us Apart, Cocaine), check out the Hartford 1992, Knebworth and Nassau Coliseum 1990 bootlegs!

The fan Goldleaf has a different texture than his own EC-1.

Never know when Big Brother is watching. Gotta have heavy respect for a man who gets feature articles published about his 'shtick' in our most popular guitar mags.

During the early 1990s Clapton mostly used the neck pickup with the TBX rolled off and the MDX cranked up to achieve his signature "woman tone". Nowadays he uses the middle pickup much frequently than the other pickups.

Sorry to jump into an old thread, but it touches on something I have wondered.

I have a question about the colors of the original Clapton Stratocasters with the Gold Lace Sensor pickups, I know when launched they were available in Pewter, Green and Red and then the Black "Blackie" model followed soon after. I thought these were the only color options.

However I have seen some models around 2006 with the lace sensors in 'Mercedes Blue' is this correct that there were some of the lace sensor Clapton Strats produced in this color?

thanks Sundance

I am aware of the CS models with the noiseless pickups, these are not the ones I am talking about.

I have seen some 06' models with lace sensors as in the original Clapton Strats.
