I can only speak for Switzerland: 7.6% of value (i.e. declared value). Bought my CS Strat for 2241 USD, retails for 3464 USD in Switzerland.

Cheers

Am I clear that you order it from the States and have it shipped, paying the tax on the import, rather that buying it at 'street' price in Europe which would add the dealer's profit to the final cost?

Yes. Saves me around 1000 USD for a teambuilt CS. My dealer has to buy from Fender Europe, so he can't compete.

Cheers

No matter what anybody says "You get what you pay for" is a rule that generally holds up. I've played many teambuilts and many masterbuilts, and in general the masterbuilts are better. However, try a few out. I recently walked into Wildwood guitars with a budget that would have allowed me to purchase either, I left with a teambuilt. I liked it more than any other guitar I played that day, probably as much as any guitar I've played- not because it was better than any of the masterbuilts, but because it had the sound and feel I was looking for (as well as the color). Most shops that sell custom shop guitars will offer quite a few teambuilts and just a few masterbuilts. So, you'll probably be more likely to find a teambuilt guitar that really speaks to you.

However, if you don't have the luxury of buying in person or you're ordering a guitar built to your specifications, I'd go masterbuilt. Someday, the names John Cruz, Greg Fessler, Todd Krause ect. are going to be legend and their guitars might be some of the most coveted instruments on earth. Imagine having one that they built just for you. It's an expensive way to carve out your own little notch in Fender and Rock 'n Roll history.

You've seconded my oft made point that you got to play'em. No amount of chit chat is going to supplant that. As far as having a little notch in Fender Rock 'n Roll history I'd say that Alainlafrance and friends have got themselves one helluva belt by now. http://www.guitarmotel.com

There's no big difference when I would buy a guitar in the US. I would have to add:

- shipping costs
- 3-4 % custom fee
- 19% tax

It makes just sense if I would be able to buy a guitar which is not available in Germany for a good price (years ago I bought second hand a PRS Mark tremonti model from a canadian guy which costed me a total of 1.500 Euro. The street price in Germany for a new guitar was 4.200 Euro).

And belive me, the times where you could cross the customs at the airport with a guitar and no customer cared about it are long gone.

Cheers, Pete

Yeah- it costs me the equivalent of $2000 for a $1400 guitar (US Retail) to import from USA to South Africa (including shipping and TAX and DUTIES), whereas if I bought from a local shop here in South Africa that gets theirs from Fender Europe, I would pay the equivalent of $4000. Fender Europe really adds way too much markup (or maybe it's the second middle man who steals the profit-margin).

US dealer rates are about half of what we pay here in Europe. And if you buy a model which is lying in the shelves, you can get a real bargain. Depends a lot on the model you want. I sent you an example through private message.

Cheers

Hi Guys,

Thanks for all your input.

I'll probably get murdered on here - I tried (and loved) them both, but ended up going for a 2012 Les Paul Standard in Tea Burst.

For my first ~2k guitar it just seemed the more versatile choice, and I seemed to get on better with the neck. It also has serious amounts of sustain, and ticks a 'lifelong dream' box to own an LP Standard (sad I know).

When i'm back in the market in 6-12 months i've got my heart set on a Masterbuilt strat, probably Jason Smith, in either desert sand or sonic(?) blue -with the CS 50's pickups. I just need to decide on the neck profile and body now - i'd like a Hendrix-y vibe in sound if not appearance - that 'hollow' sort of sound(?).

I may also make the trip over the pond to NY, to visit shops like the Music Zoo as i'll save at least the air fare on the price of the guitar.

Thanks again - i'll go back to lurking for a few months.

Danno

We are starting again from scraps after a deadly virus attack. Thanks

We think that in September we will get the whole site loaded with more than 400 guitars which means about 1500 photos to load together with their legends.
It will be interactive.
Will keep you informed
A bulk of Fender Custom Shop guitars... More than ever.(None for sale, just as before)
