Can someone please explain the thoughts behind the serial numbers of the 50th Anni Masterbuilt '54 Strats? I have serial #5716 (by Yuriy Shishkov) but they do start in the 4XXX area. Anyone?

Pre-CBS serial numbers were always random. The parts (neck plate, bridge plate, trem spring cover, etc.) were just grabbed out of the parts bin by the workers. Sounds to me like Yuriy is just being "authentic".

A member here, Sean Gephardt, has a lot of data, and serial # lists of these guitars on his website!

There is a dedicated thread and Sean Gephardt made an unclosed list of the serial numbers, the Masterbuilder and the Owner

Right. I've heard that they were going to make 1954 pieces of them and initially thought that they would be numbered from 1-1954. Then I thought, well maybe the first number indicates 2004 but wait, mine starts with a 5. I'm just confused :?

I think the figure of 1954 pieces actually refers to the limited run of 1994 40th Anniversary '54.
http://www.ggjaguar.com/stratltd.htm

As far as I know, no limit was set on the number of 2004 '54 Anniversaries, and production was continued throughout the year, but just that year, so nobody, except for Fender, really knows how many were produced.

The serial number on mine also begins with a 5.

The first ones started 40XX and ran up 60XX by the time all the orders were fulfilled. They did seem to run sequential thereabouts with the date built.

That does seem to be the case, as I've scoured the interwebs chasing this information. There are obvious gaps in the list I maintain, likely because not everyone has posted thier guitar online.

That said, I've also seen quite a few (at least two dozen) parted out on Ebya over the years, And I did hear from one guy in Europe how actually owns about 10 of these as well.
