concerning vintage guitar - please, tale some time to read this http://edroman.com/rants/vintage.htm

generally - you need to check every guitar before buying it.

I would say that most of Custom Shops are VERY good guitars. Masterbuilt guitars are in the same price (or even cheaper) than most of excellent condition vintage guitars.

You vote with your money. I would suggest to go with Fender custom shop set up to your preference

Ed Roman and his stories!!!!
He sells new guitars and loves to tell these horror stories about "asian people working in a dimed light cellar and building these forgeries...".
Yes, be aware, educated and careful buying a vintage Strat or Tele. I bought many vintage Strats in the past 20 years and had only good experiences. Just use good judgement dealing with sellers/ dealers.

Anyhow, I own both vintage and several Masterbuilt Strats. Love 'em all, but I have my preference.

It's a fact...
He used photos of a genuine Fender Strat Mustang owned by me to sell his forgery.
That was him.

FCS guitars are the best made fenders you can buy today. when it comes to comparing against a vintage, it would be on a guitar by guitar basis.

I really wish Fender would use the original plastic/shape/font of the original knobs (not just the polstyrene on special editions). there is something about the way the plastic looks cheap and the fonts (smaller than what fender uses today) green over time that I prefer. its a minor detail that irritates me...

What is important is when you pick up a guitar that it motivates you to play and inspires you to create. any guitar that can do that is right, and any guitar that can not is not for you.

The plastic's chemical composition is beyond Fender's control. Plastic made back in the 40's and 50's contained highly toxic ingredients which have been outlawed, bakelite is no longer available but was the early pick guard material.

Replication of vintage guitars can only go as far as the materials available today, it's really a very minuscule issue but I guess to some it isn't..

Polystyrene was only used on the first 2 to 3 years. They could still get the shape and font correct, which they are not.

Also remember that the early ones were prone to splitting and breaking apart from being too thin, as far as the font, most of that is from aging and UV rays, so how detailed do you want to be.. :?:
Is this an instrument to be played and enjoyed or something to be locked away in a glass curios and never touched just admired....

I bought a Custom Shop because I wanted to play that particular 56 NOS Sunburst, not to admire it as a jewel piece. ( Which regardless I still admire but, it is first and foremost an instrument )
I'm more than acceptable of a small compromise from yesterday's to present recreations, change is constant.
You could offer me the world's entire combined fortune, I still would not want to be living in the 60's let alone the 50's...No Thank You...Not even for the Pin-ups...

people commonly call the polystyrene plastic used from '54-sometime '56 for pickup covers and knobs bakelite. Its not correct, but still commonly referred to as.

My point really wasn't specifically on the "bakelite" plastic. Even guitars through the '60s as they age turn to a really cheap, but cool IMO, looking color.

My point was, if you are going to do a reissue, why not at least recreate stuff like the correct shape and font/size of the knobs? They spent so much time with every last detail... and then to half-a$$ it on the knobs... I just don't get it. :(
