I'm also in the waiting line for a Lefty strat. I wonder what percentage or custom shop orders are for lefty guitars. It must be pretty disproportionate on the lefty side, since we are so deprived otherwise...

What's the ratio in 'the real life" ?
Should be the same here.
Although in some sports (tennis...) it's much higher

I think lefties represent 5% of the general population. We are also widely known as being smarter and better looking than common right handed people.

it is said that 10% of the population are left handed - and I guess since a BIG company like Fender does hardly offer anything for leftys - that they're doing a big bunch of money out of this mess with us leftys since we have always have to go custom shop if we don't want to buy the only one available lefty model - the American Std. (oh wait - there are two - the J & the Pbass available in black or sunburst, only 4 strings and only one wood combination. )

Fender says there would be not enough demand for a bigger range.... but how can there be a bigger demand if lefty people don't want to have a black or sunburst Jazz or PBass ??? What if they like Ash bodys or a maple fretboard ??? or just a different colour ???

Best example is the Am. Deluxe 5 string (which is of course not available for leftys) - the righty can choose from a nice range of colours and wood combinations and the price here in germany for a righty one is around 1600,- euros.... last year I was letting my CS dealer made a request for a simple lefty version of that Bass ..... 5500,- euros was the answer. :D

Another funny thing was - in the news for 2012 - the new American Standart was shown and announced with a maple fretboard (the black one) and a lined fretless RW (the sunburst one) - even on the Fender page and on some dealers webpage. The lefty community went nuts of happiness and emailed Fender to make sure it is not a joke. The answer was just a slap in the face - "No there will be no changes for the lefty Am.std. exept the CS Pickups - it must be some marketing/photoshop mistake" ....

I'm sure that in the past Fender has invested a lot money in useless series and prototypes that never made it longer than one year but they are not willing to offer the lefty people the possibility to even get 20% of the freedom that a righty has in a shop.

It would be so easy :

why not making small runs each year like : 2013 the Am.Std. will be white with maple fretboards , 2014 back to standart , 2015 there will be maybe some candy apple reds , and so on....

Recently I was looking at picks. Specialty makes of different materials (brass, stone, wood) they had this carved shape on the back, so it fit better in the hand. The right hand that is. For f*ck sake!!

update :

so - as it seems my Bass is finished is should be shipped in a container via seaway which will take another 6/7 weeks :?

This actual waiting time was really annoying - I got three (!!!) wrong delivery dates from the CS Fender dealer in Düsseldorf / germany (don't know what idiots are working there :) ) - and that made it really frustrating like hearing all the time "strange - the Bass should have been finished/shipped yet" - none of those infos had been true in the end

Now when I've heard that my Bass should be shipped I requested at my dealer that the CS lounge/dealer does a request that the Bass gets here by plane since the Bass was finished later than the given delivery time - guess what - the head of the CS lounge is on hollydays till mid august - so he seems to be the only one that is allowed to ask Fender for sth. like that

If the Bass would arrive at the beginning of september it's been 1 year that I've ordered a simple Team Built PBass at my dealer ... let's hope that it was worth the waiting.

I will be playing at a very big german music event and a very famous TV show (also with very big TV ratings) in september - maybe I'll take the PBass with me to one of theese :)

Things like this make me really wonder if the CS shouldn't have more people, also more masterbuilders. But maybe those just don't grow on trees, Mike?

Cheers

The Custom Shop itself needed 9 month to build it - the first given delivery time by my CS dealer was 6-8 (for a Team Built) so Mike also cleared that up since they had been on backorder that it would take another month....

so no problems here - the CS has not made sth. wrong :)

but the other thing is :

First I have ordered my Bass at the 15th of september officially at my CS dealer - Mike told me that the Bass was ordered at the 11th of october !!! So nearly one month later - that means somebody in the line of people from my dealer to the CS is an .... well... :)

Then after now 10,5 month later the Bass is not shipped by plane to be here on time - it is shipped by seaway which will take another 6-7 weeks (or more?) so the waiting time of one year is nearly completed :)

Jon Fuente's new relic'd Strat was completed in 7 mos. That's an incredible time frame. Your spec sheet, location and choice of builder is going to govern
that. That's the ball game.
