Seen on craigslist a custom shop Eric Clapton for $1000. Seems too good to be true. In two completed ebay auctions one sold for $2000 and another for around $3600.

How can authenticity be verified?

Also, is there more that one version of the EC CS? I seen several EC CS's for sale on ebay in the $2500 to $3000+ range but there was also a listing for a CS "Blackie copy" with the claim that on 275 were built. Is that true?

Need an accurate photo of the Certificate of Authorization, as well as the neck plate and then send that information to Fender Consumer Relations to have it verified with their production records. Then hope that, when you finally take the guitar apart, the neck end and body dates correspond. We are aware that CA's and neck plates can be swapped. It's a bad business and has entertained much discussion herein.

Wonder if the seller would be willing to let me do that 'investigation' before I buy. If not, then I'll probably just let it go to some other 'lucky' buyer.

Thank for the advice.

Seller should be in possession of a COA if a first time owner. Often these guitars are handed down w/o transfer of same. In that case....caveat emptor....as always.

I called the guy and asked if he had the COA. He told me it's NOT a custom shop model. He has it listed as "Fender Custom Shop Eric Clapton Blackie Stratocaster" but it not a custom shop. $1000 bucks is still a fair price but not a great deal.

Thanks to all for the helpful advice.
