Isn't one of the reasons ebony boards are rare (in general) because they are or were difficult to fret by machine?

It may not be custom-shop, but the Jim-root Telecaster and Stratocaster(Artist Series) have ebony fretboards.

A much delayed response by me I know, but nah I will wait until it is done and then share the whole glory! heh...

In fact I should have by early fall, finally heard from my Masterbuilder after 2+ years.

The very first Fender with an ebony fretboard was the Walnut Elite Strat.

But I totally agree with Blertles, ebony was officially adopted by FMIC as a fretboard material in the early 1990s.
