I don't think I've ever seen a Fender guitar with an ebony finger board. Any reason why ebony was never used? I've seen images of vintage strats that had real dark boards (that might have been ebony?) but otherwise it looks like rosewood or maple are it for Fender.

Ebony neck Strats, Teles and basses made their first debuts in the early 1980s with the Walnut Standards and Elites although ebony was officially selected as a fretboard material in 1990.

Not true.
We have used Indian as well since the 60's. SRV's original neck had Indian.

My fault I tough that fender made the switch in the same time that Cf Martin made it ... I still have a lot to learn on rosewood board era ...

This Robben Ford Esprit is a Greg Fessler masterpiece. Greg had built many of his personal guitars before he made the switch to Gene Baker's custom axes.

For those who know the story Gene trained Greg as an apprentice a couple of decades ago.

What a beauty. Can you still order a guitar like this?

Cheers

I think so but not as a Robben Ford model of course.
There are two models : one is the FMT: Flame Maple Top, the other one is the ST, Spruce Top:

The Strat Plus Ultra from the '90s had an ebony fret board.

Not to mention the USA Deluxe FMT/QMT Telecasters with the dual Enforcer HBs.

These guitars along with the mahogany-bodied USA Special Stratocasters and Telecasters were Factory Special runs of the now popular USA Deluxe series.
