I know I have the mid-boost TBX control on my CS Clapton. But an instructor told me the signature Clapton's come with the Vol control wired to kick in a boost between 8-10. I ca't seem to tell cause it's so frigin loud :-) Can anyone confirm this?

The Masterbuilt Clapton doesn't feature the TBX, Eric disliked the muffled "honk" from the treble/bass expander when he moved from the Lace Sensors to the Vintage Noiseless in March 2000. The active mid-boost is the so-called MDX circuit, the TBX is a passive tone pot which cuts the lows and boosts the highs or vice-versa.

Both the TBX and MDX were developed by Paul Gagon in the early 1980's.

Your guitar is a Teambuilt version of his signature Strat.

Thanks. My Clapton is not a Master built, it's the 2010 CS LTD, and it does have the Master TBX on Tone 1, and Master Active Mid-Boost on Tone 2.

But my question is, does the Vol pot have an extra boost at 8.

Thanks Bill. Didn't think so, or you would think the spec sheet would point that feature out.

What a beautifully precise answer! :D

The mid-boost pot controls the amount of gain.

If the gain is cranked up to 25dB, the volume is also increased.

YES, there is a volume boost in there. Though this is nowhere advertised by Fender, the output of a Clapton Strat (i.e. without using the active mid boost) is louder than that of a passive guitar with the same pickups.

Don't know how large the difference is with the noiseless pups. With the old Lace Sensors the volume difference was quite substantial. At volume 8 a Clapton would already be as loud as a Strat Plus with its volume on 10.

That's only because the mid-boost preamp is always on. Even turned down all the way the preamp is still in the circuit and will boost the volume somewhat. It cannot be turned completely off. The original design had a switch to disable the preamp if the battery died, but Clapton rejected that configuration.

The original statement was:

"But an instructor told me the signature Clapton's come with the Vol control wired to kick in a boost between 8-10"

Yes, there is a volume increase with the mid-boost turned all the way down, but it is present regardless of the volume control setting. Also keep in mind that on a standard CTS pot with an audio taper (which is what Fender uses) there is a noticable change in volume between 8 and 10 with any guitar pickup, passive or active. This has nothing to do with the mid-boost preamp circuit but is simply a characteristic of a modern day audio taper. In my opinion, the instructor's statement is still false.

Brings back memories of an old thread, about four years ago, when one of the members was trying to verify the tone pot specs in the guitar in that he was in the planning stages to order one. We hadn't been told yet that only the Masterbuilt guitar carried a conventional tone control, yet the specs on the Custom Shop Artist Series guitar also claimed that. It took a long time to get that one straight.

Clapton wanted to get rid of the TBX because he was apparently not satisfied from the muffled tone he got from the VNs. But he agreed to retain the TBX for the regular and teambuild artist versions of his personal stage guitars.

That was likely done to maintain the integrity of the Masterbuilt instrument.

The question I had concerning my Vol, was on a CS LTD 2010 Grey. They only made those in two colors sold only in the US for the 2010 tour. I doubt they would be any different than the Masterbuilt. In fact I was told you could not get this LTD edition as a Masterbuilt. But then again, I was told you can pretty much get anything Masterbuilt if you want to pay for it 8)

Both EC LTD signatures were offered in team and masterbuild versions.
