I bought one of these about a year ago:

http://platinum.guitarcenter.com/Guitar ... Cat=&type=

Not that exact guitar, but one just like it. When mine was listed on the GC website (my exact guitar's serial number) it advertised an alder body, but in store, it was advertised on the price tag as having an ash body.

Does anyone know which is correct? I love the way it sounds - that's why I bought it - but I would like to know.

in general, the 56' timemachine came with a alder body, unless blonde, which is always ash, or if the store or customer special ordered one in ash, some stores did special runs with sunburst on ash bodies. In 1956 Fender started with ash 2 tone burst, then switched mid year to 2 tone on alder, and again even back then blonde was always on ash.

Thanks!

I actually can very faintly see the grain pattern through the finish. Fine, tightly packed lines running parallel to the strings makes me pretty confident that it's alder, since the ash grain seems to be a bit more gnarly.
