Hello! Just picked up a new guitar and thought this might be the best place to get some help in figuring out what it is:

- Rosewood Fretboard 1989 Fender Custom Shop Stratocaster in a Black Pearl Dust
- Gold Lace Sensors
- Floyd Rose "Original"
- "Fender Custom Shop" Stamp on back of HS
- "Made In U.S.A." Serial "E 900014"

Anyone know what model it is? Was it a Limited/Special Edition? Any info would be appreciated.

The ONLY reference I can find is from a closed eBay auction (I cut out alot of the text and tried to keep the presumed informational content)....does anyone have any idea just exactly what these were..."Special/Limited" Edition???

1990-1991 Fender Stratocaster Ultra Floyd Rose NAMM Show Prototype:

This is a rare 1990-91 Fender Custom Shop Prototype Stratocaster Ultra in Blackburst with a matching painted head stock, Gold Lace Pickups, a factory German Floyd Rose with the locking nut and Clapton modification.

This is the first year Fender factory installed Floyds and possibly one of the first to have a locking nut not the Wilkinson Roller nut on most Plus and Ultra models. Stays in tune whenyou use the tremolo.

This Custom Shop Ultra has the Eric Clapton mod; a mid-range boost/roll off that is used on the Eric Clapton model Stratocasters today. The neck on this guitar is thin, quick and straight as an arrow.

You won't find another one like this in Black burst a rare finish used by the Fender Custom Shop with painted headstock to match! Also included is the original tweed case with crushed purple interior.

Ultras were introduced for the first time at the NAMM show in 1991 and were only made until 1995. The Ultra was the top of the Fender line higher than the popular Plus model.

This is one of what are generally considered very desirable years of Fender's Custom Shop 1989 - 1995.

Very slim fast neck that feels like it plays itself. Sweet action and AMAZING playability!

The Fender Lace Gold pickups are hot enough to get that great rock and blues tones, yet gentle enough to back off and get some beautiful high end sparkle.

*** PICS ARE FROM THE AUCTION FOR SERIAL "E 900046", AS I HAVE NOT TAKEN ANY PICS OF MINE YET ***

Hi, I have one of these, too. Same specs, same color, r/w board. Over the years I saw a couple of them, some were finished in red sparkle. Cool 80s vibes... :-)

Cool! Do you have any idea what "Model" these are? Were they a Limited Edition Series?

I am not sure but just tossing this out as a consideration! Since these are Custom Shop there can be variation. Maybe the hang tag is indicating that these were a limited edition for the Guitar Center? (thus the GC on the tag??) But look like it is part of the Stratocaster: H.M. ('Heavy Metal') Series.

Here is what the Blue Book of Guitars says and it seems to fit as I have seen these same kind of guitar Made in Japan around this same era. Some came with Lace Pickups and others didn't. The only other thing different is that the body on this one was more based on the Plus/ American Standard style rather than the sharper bodies on some HM. I have a Custom Shop that was one of 500 made that was a GC Limited Edition Maple cap beauty around this same era.

"Originally produced overseas. In 1988, the H.M. Strat series moved to U.S. production from 1989 through 1992. H.M. Series Strats feature a sharply contoured basswood body, 24-fret fingerboard, black headstock finish, and various pickup combinations of DiMarzio humbuckers/American Standard single coils/Fender-Lace Sensor pickups."

I believe you're right, Xhefri! I've seen about 5 of them over the years of this type, all CS. Looking at the tag it cam be pretty safe to conclude that this was a special run the CS did for GC. Mike could possibly confirm it.

Thank you for the responses and suggestions as to what it might be, esp. you XHEFRI for taking the time to respond to my request for your insights.

Chanman246 - Would "Mike" be Mike Eldred? I will post an inquiry in his section. Thank you.

The serial number on mine is E900020, so our guitars are very likely from the same run. I checked the neck and body dates and both are stamped Dec 15 1989. Neck is signed by Ch. Sanchez and body by Scott Grant.

I like vintage style Fenders but there is something about this Strat which makes me wanna keep it. Maybe the unusual combo of 3 "single coils" (Silver Lace Sensors) and a Floyd.

A few years back I asked John Page about this model but he could not remember any details.

Thanks for the addl info on yours. Ours are 26 Serial Numbers apart. Def the same run I'm sure. An unusual guitar w/the features. Pretty damn cool though if I do say so myself! ;)

I'm guessing it was a run of 50, as the other on w/the Maple Fretboard is #46. Maybe a Guitar Center Special...who knows??? Hoping Mike Eldred will respond to the thread in his section.

Are there any other markings other than the signatures?

Sorry, only the dates and signatures. Maybe it was a special run for GC, did you try to contact them? After 20+ years it will be hard to find further details but it´s fun going through CS history!

GC? I actually bought it from them. They didn't know what it was, had it listed as a Strat Plus. Got any pics of yours? Would like to see it if you don't mind sharing.
