Hey guys,

I picked up a Tele Jr. Custom Shop model over the weekend that has a badly damaged body. It appears to have been a guitar used in performances, but I don't know by whom. I'm hoping Mike Eldred can shed some light on it's origin.

Now, provided the guitar did not belong to some famous guitarist and was not thrown from or broken on stage, would it be worth fully restoring the body or renovating and preserving it as is?

Part of me would like to see it refinished and returned to it's original trim, but another part says that gluing the wood to prevent more damage, and leaving the finish as is is the best route as it allows the 'life events' of the guitar live on.

I'm wondering how each thought would effect the value, or is the value already all but gone due to the damage?

It's more than roadworn, it's highwayworn..
I hope you didn't pay much for that wreck.
The cost of restoring it would be certainly higher than the present value of the guitar as it's a chambered body with a set neck. Further more restoring it would suppose to re-instal P 90 pick ups but maybe the internal routing has been enlarge to fit the filtertrons.
Not worth IMHO

I didn't pay much at all. My thought was if it wasn't a true Custom Shop I'd part out the tuners and pickups and make a bit of money. But it plays nice and and the story is interesting.

In that case go and see a luthier and ask him for an estimate for glueing the pieces to prevent any extension of the damages.

What do you think of polishing up the hardware on older guitars in general? I know in the antique world polishing an old brass clock can hurt the value. I guess on this guitar it's personal preference, but in general, is polishing the metal good or bad where value is concerned?

In my case I have no problem to clean vintage guitars , including hardware, as long as it doesn't alter the guitar itself; this is a day to day maintenance to keep it at its best.
