Hi all. Nice site.

I'm a woodworker making a couple of guitar stands for my step-son. Am making one each for his electric and his acoustic, but I have no clue as to the styles or models. Both are Fender, tho.

I was going to use foam for the bottom pegs and neck support, but heard that some oil-based plastics and rubbers can damage the guitars finish coat. (heard it can react, and make the clear-coat milky) Is this true? I really don't want to make these hardwood stands, just to put some crappy felt on 'em, but also don't want to screw-up his toys. Would sure be easier just asking him, but that would ruin his birthday surprise.

Was thinking of using natural (not dyed) leather for the cushioning. Would this be ok, or are there any guitar stand parts stores that can help with my choices?
I tried contacting thru the Fender Support e-mail link, but got no reply.
I've looked around and could find nothing on this subject so any advise or links offered, is truly appreciated.
Thank-you...Rusty

Instead of crappy felt, you could buy nice felt: thick melton cloth (like pea-coat thick), or thinner hat-quality felt, would be very nice on a hardwood stand. Cooler than foam, I think.

Still seeking links or suggestions, but thanks Jim. Checked on the web...didn't know felt can be more expensive than the leather I was thinking about using.
Also, did I by chance post in the wrong forum? Not that I'm impatient for shitloads of help. Got a couple of weeks till I need 'em done, lol.

Actually, you did post in the wrong forum... this one is for discussion of Fender Custom Shop guitars. You might get more play in the general discussion forum.

Hello Rusty Trichrome,

I see a lot of guitars with finish damage
where they rest on the stand if the owner
is careless, when I get a stand I'm gonna
get a little pillow. Then I'll be as comfortable
as my axe.

Cheers.

K, thanks for the replies. Any chance a mod could move this to the appropriate forum?

I guess I'm going with leather in hopes the tanning process didn't leave behind anything damaging.

Curious tho...does Fender use a finish coat that can be fogged (damaged) by certain cushioning materials?

AFAIK its the nitrocellulose lacquers that can react. The poly finishs don't seem to have the same problem. No first hand experience concerning this though so don't put too much stock in what I say :)

I think Highbinder is right: you only have to worry about rubber or surgical tubing reacting with nitro finishes. AFAIK, Poly is bullet-proof.

Trying to get subtle hints from my kid, and he's got a Fender and one from a local Las Vegas mfgr. Ed Romans?
Anyway I commented about the beautiful finish on them and he specifically mentioned the poly finish on the Fender, but didn't say what the finish was on the Ed Roman (Eastman?) model. Since ER's local, will give 'em a call about it.

Y'all are the best. Thank you very much. I just didn't want to chance a mistake.
