My Custom Deluxe Tele is humming … and it's a more vehement than modest noise. :?

Originally I thought that the humming is a more or less usual effect of the selected pickups. (The Custom Deluxe has a "Twisted" Tele Single-Coil neck pickup and a Seymour Duncan (Pearly Gates) BG-1400 Single Coil bridge pickup.) But since I’ve heard about another Deluxe Tele which is not humming I’m no longer sure about my initial pickup theory. (benke wrote: "... Mine has no hum at all. I have nothing to complain about thus far ...")

After changing amp, power plug and guitar cables without any effect to the humming I opened the control plate of my Tele and had a look at the electrics. As far as I can tell everything looked quite fine, e.g. the connections were carefully soldered, the potis and the switch seemed to be fine too.

Following the wiring I spotted two wires, one red and one white, which are soldered together but not connected to anything (nor used?) at all. They are almost completely insulated with a black cover, only their tails aren't fully covered. (You may see these wires almost in the middle of the picture right above the white one. Their uncovered tails are a little bit blurred but visible.)

Approaching these wires with a screwdriver or a finger increases the humming. Touching them makes it worse, the humming gets louder. Even though the two wires are without any function they seem to be (at least partly) responsible for the humming. Note: there was no need to touch the stripped tails to let the Tele hum. :(

Does anybody know where the wires come from and what's their optional use in an alternate setup?
Is it possible that (only) these wires are responsible for the humming?
Is it feasible to cover or shield them to avoid or reduce the humming? How?
What (else) could be done?

Any guidance would be helpful,
thanks in advance

Those twisted red and white wires are from the Duncan pickup, they join the pickup's two coils together. These two wires are soldered together with heat shrink applied thereafter to insulate the solder joint. It is correct and appropriate that they 'go nowhere', so to speak and that they would get louder to the touch. Do nothing (more) with them.

Frankly (although I can't see all the wiring), I think your problem is that the bridge plate isn't grounded.

Thank you, Martian. Maybe you're right.

I removed the bridge very carefully and I didn't find any grounding. At least there wasn't the usual grounding with the small wire laid through the body which is (only) pinned to the bridge.

Maybe the Deluxe Tele bridge is grounded differently? But how?

I can't imagine that the grounding is something that got forgotten ...

Guidance would still be helpful,
thanks in advance

Well, the bridge plate appears to be grounded. That copper plate on the bottom of the pickup is soldered to the pickup's ground wire lead. Now premising it is making good contact, said plate has it's metal height adjustment screws going through it and the bridge plate simultaneously. Ergo, the bridge plate is in fact, grounded. Your problem evidently is somewhere else.

Do you have a VOM (multimeter)?

Would you please take some more clear, detailed pictures of your pots, switch and jack wiring.

Thanks again.

I will have a deeper look behind the control panel and take some pictures ...maybe these are a little bit better:

So far there's no VOM available but I'll try to ask a friend for one - but haven't got much experience ... which means I'd ask for more support :)

You're welcome.

Don't bother with the VOM. I see what appears to be your problem. Evidently, your circuit is a bad hybrid of a "Greasebucket" and a 'regular' one. Either way, it is incorrect. Instead of typing out all the errors, omissions and contrasts, I'm sure you can find a 'regular' Tele wiring diagram on your own. As to the "Greasebucket" circuit, I found this article/diagram for you:

http://www.premierguitar.com/Magazine/I ... rcuit.aspx

You can compare and contrast between the two circuits and choose whichever one suits your purposes. Rewire accordingly and see what happens.

I disagree. The wiring of Gunifer's Tele is correct for the Greasebucket as shown here:

http://support.fender.com/service_diagr ... B_SISD.pdf

The thing covered in black heat shrink tubing is the resistor. The cap on the left appears slightly twisted which may have broken or shorted a connection. I have wired my AVRI 52 Tele with the Greasebucket using this exact wiring diagram and it works perfectly with no noise.

I'm only going by what I perceive from the photos. If Bill sees otherwise and has a proven diagram for you, by all means, utilize it.

I'm not sure what you perceive.

The tone control wiring is correct for Greasebucket.

The SD bridge pickup is probably out of phase with the neck and that would account for the reversal of the neck pickup wires to the switch and back of the volume pot.

The only wire I can't account for is the yellow wire going from the back of the volume pot to where? Perhaps that is the missing bridge ground wire?

Martian and Bill, thank you very much for your answers, participation and involvement (so far) :)

Most likely the wiring of my Tele should be in accordance with the intentions of the FCS … but maybe somebody had forgotten the Custom Deluxe Tele wiring specs while he soldered my Tele and some connections got mixed up

Wires (as far as I can tell):
- small red, white and green (maybe it's blue) from bridge pickup (white and red not in use, but soldered together)
-yellow, white and black (the bundle) from bridge pickup (my guess); but maybe Bills suggestion is right and one of them is the 'missing' ground wire
-big white and black wires from the jack …

I haven't got a wiring diagram of the Deluxe Tele … A chance to get a little bit further might be to ask someone with very special know how - maybe the FCS - about the Deluxe wiring? Even they should know ...

Probably there might be a bad solder joint or whatsoever that causes the humming. But I think I shouldn't test nor re-solder all joints by myself. If needed I'd better take the guitar 'back' to the authorized dealer and let them find the cause and fix it. Maybe there will be an opportunity to compare 'the humming' of two models too.

Thanks a lot,
G

P.S.: It's quite funny to to write about a humming guitar and look at pictures of possible causes

Based on your photos, your guitar is wired correctly to the Custom Shop specs:

http://products.fendercustomshop.com/pr ... 1509810854

A wire could have come loose. Unless you are compatent at troubleshooting and soldering, your best choice would be to contact Fender or the selling dealer.
