So I came across this clip yesterday. A brilliant live version of one of my fav songs of theirs...

Mark's playing his '61 strat...

The reason I'm posting it here is because it's got me thinking how cool it would be to custom order a similar guitar through the custom shop. So I got on to thinking about the specs and came up with...

1961 Left Handed Stratocaster
Lightly reliced in Dakota Red
Dark rosewood, round-lam board
Mid 60's C shaped neck
Quarter-sawn maple, satin finished
Medium-Jumbo frets
10" Radius
Fat 50's pick ups
Aged mint green pickguard
5 way switch, bridge pick up wired to a tone pot.

All the neck specs are based on my '63 dealer select strat's neck, which I really love.

I think It'd be a KILLER guitar! 8)

In a few words you've ordered an MK-inspired Strat built with your own specs.

Mark's signature axe uses Texas Special pickups and a 9,5" radius. It also has an ash body finished in Hot Rod Red.

Your new CS guitar seems to be a good departure from Knopfler's '61.

Found another live rendition of the song - Rockpalast Festival - Cologne (Germany) February 16th, 1979 - Mark plays his 1961 Strat fitted with a maple-cap neck.

Why not ordering your CS Strat with a maple-cap neck?

To be clear, I havent ordered anything yet. Just dreaming for now!

Thanks, another great live version of that song!

Though, i believe the guitar in your clip is #80470. A '61/'62 refinished in red. Note that the guitar in that clip has had its strap button moved from the horn to somewhere on the back of the guitar around the neckplate  Also, rumour has it it may not be an original american made Fender...

The guitar in the clip I posted I believe is #68354. A '61 also refinished in red.

There is a photo from Germany '79 backstage somewhere with all the bands equipment and both of these guitars are in the photo.

But yes, this would be a Knopfler '61 inspired build rather than a replica of his original. More to my specs and Dakota red, though darker, is my favourite red finish. Fat 50's just because I've always like the sound of them but never owned a guitar fitted with them!

As for the neck...well I much prefer the tonal quality of rosewood these days, plus i think a red guitar looks cooler with rosewood neck instead of maple 8)

I personally use Fat 50s in both my stage Strats and can get pretty darn accurate MK tones. I personally think the TSs are too ballsy for the MK Sig.

With your new axe you can also nail some cool Police-era tones as Andy plays a similar guitar like yours...
