:o

did this actually happen?

sounds almost unreal.

I feel sorry for you man, what a lame experience... and I am glad you left with your guitar, a guy like this shouldn't even be allowed to come near a CS instrument.

What an $@!. I hate people who believe all that mythological "mojo" stuff about "tonewood" etc. Sometime I feel like slapping them and saying "Guitars aren't magic folks, it's some magnets in some wood, get real!"

Unbelievable!
:?

I remember buying my amp off a guy at his house - he was telling me (in a knowitall way) how he could play Cliffs of Dover. I offered up my guitar for him to show me, and he sat there, with his arms folded and said "I don't feel like it right now".

Maybe they're related..?!?!

How in the world can loosening the screws on the neck plate give a better tone? That guy has got to be at least a quart low, maybe even 2.

well, its easy.
because of the mumbo jumbo, figamajig, whachamacallit, you know the the thingy, that
when turned a quarter counter effective, i mean clockwise, gives you the tonegasmic
sumpin.
or at least thats what i told the guy with the sonic blue strat he tried selling for 3grand,
but obviously worth 2000 maybe a tv, because of the light rw fretboard.

Heck man, I don't even know if I would have gone over to the guy's house...

He might have had some anti-light rosewood ninjas hiding in the corner to do some badness to you while he loosened the neck plate even further!

Is there some sort of color chart that shows at which shade rosewood loses it's tone?
Or does it just get darker if you don't change the oil every 3000 miles?

And I wonder how much better it would've sounded if you'd pulled the screws completely outa the neck?

The ONLY way to really get a true test of tone is to have your left foot propped up on a monitor and make with the guitarface while you're "testing".
No......really!!!

I am not saying this guy did what he said he did correctly because he sounds like an A-hole, but there is a theory/technique of setting the neck on a bolt on guitar and getting the tightest deepest fit possible. The technique is to bolt on the neck, tighten all screws, string up to pitch, then turn and loosen each screw a 1/8 or 1/4 turn or so the string tension pulls the neck tight into the pocket, then you re-tighten the screws and your neck should in theory be in the deepest tightest fit under string pressure. Again, it is just a slight turn and when you reach that fourth screw you will probably hear a slight creek sound as the neck is pulled into the pocket, then re-tighten the screws so the neck stays set. I don't know if Fender does this as normal procedure, but I do know some guitar makers and or tech do use the technique. You do need to know what you are doing because over loosening under tension could strip out the screw holes, so be careful but if done correctly it should not be a problem and may add to some better transfer of resonance between neck and body.

^^^ Yes I picked up this tip somewhere, and I believe in it, as I have done it several times (only once per guitar) and it usually seems to add a little sustain and pop to the strings. It's not really mumbo jumbo, the tension of the strings does pull the neck tight into the pocket. How much difference it might make is a matter of perception and opinion, but I'm very skeptical about all this stuff, and I'm convinced it has a positive effect in many cases. You hear that little creak, sometimes after loosening each screw, not just the last one. Just an eighth of a turn, you're not doing anything radical to your guitar. And of course, you tighten them back up!

Still I agree the guy was a bonehead.
