I'm curious about the actual construction of the round-lam fingerboards on vintage '60s Fender necks vs. those made today by the CS.

- "bent" vs. "carved" construction?
- thickness of veneer?
- type of glue used?

I ask because I've read anecdotal accounts that the CS veneer is slightly thicker than vintage examples, and there is speculation that the vintage boards were mated to the necks using hot hide glue (but I've yet to read any evidence to support this claim). I've also read that the earliest veneered boards in mid/late '62 were "bent" to form, then radiused after gluing, but shortly thereafter Fender changed to a "carved" construction method where the board was radiused before gluing. Is this correct? :?

How does the CS build them today?

- "bent" vs. "carved" construction? Carved. Nothing was ever "bent".
- thickness of veneer? It varied. We are more consistent now. Also take into account that you thin that board out every time you re-fret.
- type of glue used? Normal wood glue. Not hide glue ever.

Thanks, Mike!

Somewhat related...approx. when did Fender start to migrate from BRW to IRW for the veneered boards in the '60s?

Somebody's fantasy is that Fender used BR exclusively and then "switched" to some other type of RW. They used several types. For example, SRV's number one was Indian RW.

I've often got the impression that back in the day Fender used whatever wood and parts they could get their hands on. i.e need some pickup screws? Go to the hardware store and pick some up.

I'm always amazed when people ask about the really minor details about parts: "What kind of screws did Fender use back in the 50s?" or "What neck shape was used for X number year."

I'm guessing that over time Fender began to be a bit more standardized.

Mike, any thoughts on this?

Nobody had a "list of shapes" back then. You got what you got.
Much more consistency now, although (in the FCS and on the regular production line) now the final sand is still all done by hand so the shapes are not exactly the same every time.

I used to own a late '62 Strat with round-lam board. The serial number was pretty close to SRV's. I got it from the original owner and it was almost mint, the rosewood board was also Indian Rosewood.
