Neck says 1990, and I have been told that all custom shops from this year had to be custom ordered. I purchased it off ebay and the description red dakota red matching headstock, however after having it refretted, my luthier informed me when he removed the nut that he found a gold strip indicating it was candy apple red. I have seen somewhere that when a serial number started with SE it meant it was a signature guitar of some artist. Is this a sig of someone? If so who? Any info about what it is and its origins would be greatly appreciated. I just turned 21 and I received this as a b day present for and it is truly my dream guitar (year of my birth).

things were a lot different w/ serial numbers for the early Custom Shop guitars, which is what your guitar appears to be. any way we could see closer pictures?

Something seems off w/ the serial number, now that I've gotten a good look at it. It could be real, I'm not 100% sure. Maybe Mike or Rob will chime in on this.

Thanks for the reply. I would really appreciate it if one of them could shed some light on the topic. Are you questioning whether the neck and body are actually from the custom shop? Or do you think maybe the neck was swapped out? I thought the custom shop stamps looked pretty Legit. I hope it is 1990 CS if not I have been had real good considering I paid more for this guitar with a refret than I did a couple yrs ago for a brand new CS 60's relic!!

Found this while doing further research within the forum.

I have an Art Esparza 1992 CS '57 Reissue. AE transcribed in the body under the pickguard. Can anybody tell me where I can read a biography about Art? I read on a website he built at least on guitar for Eric Clapton, but not sure if that's true. This guitar is miraculously and wondrously formed. It is a thing of great beauty.

Could the AE carved ii the cavity of the first pickup (see photo) be the same AE seen here? Maybe this will help authenticate and point us in the right direction

And again here... This time user even specifies AE us carved in the neck pickup cavity!

This 1957 Custom Shop reissue is a gorgeous pearl white with gold hardware. It is another work of Art Esparza. Number 389 to be exact. Inscribed in the neck pick-up cavity is AE 389. It was made in 1992 for delivery to American Music, Fremont, Seattle WA. The neck is birds eye maple. Beauty attracts.

There is foil on the back of the pick guard. A 5 position switch. The neck is vee'd toward the nut and round toward body. It is a players dream.

Just called fender and spoke with someone in regards to the strat. Turns out that it was typical for a guitar to start with SE from the early custom shop. Something to do with how it branched out from R&D and they frequently made signature editions and they could have kept the abbrev. He did say however that it was odd that it had six numbers following SE but it was likely that it still was legit. He was very nice and helpful and is even doing more research for me. I sent him the link my photobucket album so he can tell me more about my strat. Customer service at its best!

The serial number (SE8xxxxx) is a serial number from 1988. This can be verified through Fender. The Custom Shop neck numbers and dates should match. It may have been originally sold in 1990, but the neck serial number is a 1988 series. If the date stamp on the neck is 1990, then I would question the difference. Also, looks like Orange drop cap, although it’s hard to tell from that picture, but I don’t think the custom shop used them in 1988 or 1990.
How does it sound?

Hi,
Thanks for your interest in trying to helping me out. I have contacted fender and sent them about 85 pics. The did verify the strat and say it looks legit for the time period. The neck is stamped 90 and the body 91. However, no matter the year it sounds AMAZING! I could not be more happy with how it turned out.

Merry Christmas!
