I'd be afraid to put a dent in that one.

Mark Kendrick? The man who was chiefly responsible for the famous gold-leafed Custom Shop Strat used by Eric Clapton in the late 1990s?

I didn't know that, though Mark did build my MB 50th anniversary 1954 stratocaster, which may be the only left handed one out of the whole run. Actually I was able to request him for the 50th '54 since it was effectively a special order. I hope that Clapton guy likes Marks work.

Mark built the gold leaf guitar for EC during the company's 50th anniversary in 1996. For the instance ol' slowhand was in the search of something special, a piece that could hang in a museum like the Louvre. John Page, who was vice president of the Custom Shop during that period immediately thought of a Strat in 23k gold, but they needed 3 tests before the good combination between the form and typical varnish of the guitar was completed. It was the main instrument used by Eric during 1997 for the Legends tour, the concert Music for Montserrat in London and for the Korea – Japan tour. The Gold Leaf Strat was later sold by Christies for US $455,000.

Fender reissued this guitar in 2004 in the form of a limited-edition run (50 pieces were made globally), almost eight years after the original was released in 1996. Built to Clapton's exacting specs, the Gold Leaf Strat was presented with Fender Vintage Noiseless pickups and a standard tone control (instead of the TBX circuit found on the 1996 model).

The Gold Leaf Stratocaster became very popular in Japan in the late 1990s and there's no surprise the folks at Bacchus/Deviser made their own tribute replica in 1998.

The BST-GL was discontinued in 2003.

I have a TK Gold Leaf Clapton - and it is a piece of art as well as a well tuned playing machine! Other than that I have two JC's, and they are incredible. Both are relics, which JC is obviously great with. The necks he makes are the best - so smooth. The wood they choose for each guitar is the the cream of the crop. Really anything put out by the CS is incredible. They all do different things, and they're all great.

Not sure I could wait for a Cruz or Krause these days ,so I might go with a new guy like Jason Smith or Paul Waller. There is a definate even consistency between builders, as the guys posting here have demonstrated the older well established Masterbuilders get selected purely for historical reasons ie 'he built for Richards or EC'

I remember asking for the wait time for Jason Smith about 6 months ago and it was over a year, so it could even be longer now. granted it's still less than what you would have to wait (and, as of now, pay) for a Krause or Cruz but he certainly seems quite busy.

I am investigating the wait times atm (well, my FCS dealer is) before I can choose the MB for my order. I guess the one I pick will be my new favorite  (well, tied with John Cruz)

Mark Kendrick built my only MB Fender. It's a 50th Anniversary '54 Strat. Best Strat I have ever owned, and I've been playing them since the early 70's. I don't think Mark is still in the CS, is he?

Mark is still around. Just don't think he's building at the moment!

I'd like to revive this thread and have people talk a little bit more about why they favored one builder over another. I'm thinking about placing my first MB order this summer and I'm really curious. Trying to resist the urge of JC, but I also want to buy this as a reward for myself for something that won't occur for a few years, so I don't necessarily mind the wait.

Strat, late 60s based (minus the late 60s finishing materials) aesthetic with some slightly more modern functional specs. Sunburst, reverse headstock, with a subtle, realistic relic treatment. Looking to create a truly well played-in feeling and look that is simply not achievable with today's finishing treatments and my lack of budget to buy a genuine vintage instrument. I have a sincere preference for well-used instruments and I want it to be as if I found that perfect one that has already had some love, been well broken-in, and just happens to be to my specs.

So I guess the reason I've initially leaned toward JC thus far is because of my super-particular relic preferences. From my understanding he is the relic master, and I feel like he might best be able to understand my desire to land square in the middle of the two opposing schools of thought regarding relicing. The rest of my specs don't really seem to scream one builder or the other. Just a late 60s strat with late 60s pickups, big reverse late 60s headstock, more modern frets, and a 5 way switch.

Sorry all if this is heading off-topic. Don't let my self-centered post distract too far from the topic. Regardless of the info I'm trying to get, I would still like to hear why all of you chose your builders specifically. If nothing else it helps my process of elimination.
