Why are there so many CS parts, bodies, necks, pick ups, and even COA's for sale on eBay?

It's very profitable to sell a guitar as parts. People always want to build their own guitar, something my fiancé is doing for me at the moment. I select the parts I want, she buys them.

The parts are:

- 1994 Strat Plus body
- 2001 American Deluxe neck, LSR, maple
- Custom Shop '69 pickups neck and middle
- Seymour Duncan PG+ bridge
- Still not decided on trem, but either the Deluxe Locking tremolo or the American Deluxe two-point push-in
- Black bits, lots of

So, it's a hybrid of a Lonestar, an American Deluxe, a Plus, and Custom Shop parts too. Without all the people on eBay selling these parts, I'd have to buy the whole guitars, strip them, and then sell the other bits. Which is just annoying.

A little long-winded, but I hope it makes sense.

Also... you can actually make really good money from selling individual parts. Some people, like me, may just want certain parts. I recently broke a Telecaster for parts and made double what I paid for it originally.

It's a little distressing to see some guitars broken for parts though. Rare, limited edition models... I wouldn't have the heart to do that.

Some people will sell anything if there is a profit to be made. Other people will buy anything if they think they can get it cheaply.

The chopshop for parts is not the issue which creates the most controversy in these Forums. It is that of neck plate serial numbers, headstock serial numbers, and COA's which can open the door to nefarious activities on the part of the unscrupulous preying on the uninformed. You build a guitar for your own purposes...that's one thing. You turn around and sell it, representing it to be something its not, that's another thing all together.

I came in here tonight looking for an answer to this problem.

Someone is selling a Custom Shop guitar on eBay that I'm interested in. It has the CS logo in the back of the headstock and a R serial number in the neck plate. No COA or Custom Care stuff in the case. The seller says it's all original and not a Partcaster but when I started asking more questions he said it was an estate sale and he had no more info about it.

How do I make sure it's not a fake? It's the "R" serial number enough to make it legit?

Means the neck is probably legit, but the rest of the guitar may not be. Ask for photos under the pickguard for shielding/routing tells, any writing in the neck heel, etc.

Well, guess what, I called Fender's fantastic Customer Service with the serial number and in no time I had confirmation that it matched the eBay item plus an email with the full specs of the guitar. I'm confident enough to buy it now and if any of the parts are not original, there's always Buyer Protection. Good job Fender!

Keep in mind that our 'favorite' aftermarket chopshops sells neck plates as well. The serial number matches the guitar originally mated to the neck plate. If all the specs are consistent with the guitar, you're OK. You'll just have to correlate the two once you've got it in your hands. Keep us posted.

Just out of curiousity; whay makes a Strat Plus body so desirable to you? To my recollection these bodies were (a) rather heavy, (b) lacked the proper round contours (c) had the "swimming pool" under the pickguard... no desirable features whatsoever.... :?

I wanted a blueburst Strat without having to pay for a refinish. The body feels the right weight to me. I don't like traditional Strats over much, and prefer the shape of the modern bodies. It also is ready straight away from a two-point trem unit. And as you can see, I like to have a variety of pickups. If I change to 3 humbuckers with this, I'll have no trouble.

Personal taste is oft varied, with one man's gold being another man's garbage... I like my garbage.

Be sure to look for stamps in the wood under neckplate, in trem cavity, under pickguard, and in neck pickup cavity.

Good explanation! If a.o. switching to humbuckers is your thing that type body will do the job.
