Hi all. In the early stages of planning a custom build. Not going to be a master built as my funds dont stretch to that at the minute. I own a couple of strats, one of which is a CS but this will be my first custom order. I would like it based on a 62 with vintage hardware, 9.5 radius medium frets etc. So nothing out of the ordinary really. My query lies with neck profile and pick ups. Ideally i would like texas specials, but im a bit concerned regarding there versatility. My current CS strat has 69s through out and as versatile and as good as they sound, they can get a bit ice picky for my taste. So im after suggestions please for a versatile pup config or set that has the warm woodyness of the Texas specials and the versatility of the 69s.
Secondly neck profile. Again my CS strat has a 65 C, which i believe is the same as large C? Its fits my hand brilliantly and feels perferct for me. But after a few hours my left hand does feel it a bit as i do play alot with my thumb over the top. I also feel equally as comfortable with the modern C of my standard strat. But can feel thin, almost toothpick thin on occasion. So can someone suggest a profile that is maybe in between the two. As this is not a MB i am restricted to stuff of the peg. Im planning a trip to Coda Music at some point over the week end to get a feel and to pin down exactly what i would like. i spoke to them today and they were extremely helpful and even gave me a rough quote to what i want over the phone. But i would like to go there with a bit of knowledge under my belt.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Get your hands on an American Deluxe V-neck and give that a try.

I have. Tried several a while back when the 2010 Amrican Deluxes finally made it to the UK. Not for me really. Didn't feel like it filled my palm and sort of like I was reaching around the neck if you see what I mean. Apologies for the poor description

Then try a '57Vintage Hot Rod.

I'm sure that Doug at Coda will be able to get you exactly what you want/need!
Have fun trying them all! :)

Hi there I have a few with the 65C and you are right it is a medium/large size however I don't have any issues with it and I dont have big hands. The 60 is quite thin and to me the modern C is kinda wide but thinner than the 65. I don't go crazy over the U. I had similar thumb issues as you describe with the modern V and it was with trepidation I tried the 56V thinking it would be the same however I found it moderately chunky like the 65 but not at all uncomfortable. I suggest you at least try the 56 if you can. Be warned though you may end up leaving the store with a 56 and a few others!
Have you also thought of trying an S1 with custom shop pickups like the 69s. The cap in circuit may give you a little extra grunt when you need it. :D

Cheers for the suggestions.
I do like the 69s in general. Love the punchy mid range. And I don't think grunt is the issue with them. Just sound a bit tinny any really bright. If I eq them down on my amp or back the tone off on the guitar. The treble becomes a tad stifled.

Hi DC,

I was in a similar position to yourself and a visit to Coda really helped me make my mind up.
I got to spend some time playing a '69 Strat with a 'U'-shaped neck and Abby Handwound '69s - Man, those pickups sound killer!
Anyway, only you can decide which neck feels best to you but if you like '69 pickups then maybe Texas specials would be overkill.
One thing to consider is does the guitar you have with them already in have a maple fingerboard? To my ears maple sounds inherently brighter than a rosewood board - maybe you'd like them better with rosewood?
Another thing to think about is just having bog-standard American Strat pickups - I really like them and reckon they're more versatile than Texas Specials.

Whatever you decide, have fun trying out a bunch of guitars! And I agree with Butterscotch, you're in great hands with Doug :O)

Now the advantage to all this input is that you get enough in the details to do some research. The advantage of the Custom Shop is that you have all of these components come together in a well built, possibly one of a kind, guitar. The drawback is always going to be the cost, unless you can assemble a parts guitar for yourself from components acquired here and there, or do an electronics mod in an existing guitar that suits you. There are certainly sources available to do all of that.

Couldn't agree more Doc.
Eversince i got my first CS guitar i ve hankered for one built to my spec.
I have no real need for a MB, although it would be nice, but my guitar is specific to me and thats all i need. Be it team built or master built.
My off the peg CS strat has phenomenal build quality and played like nothing else. I have no problem paying for that quality and more so, im lucking enough to be in the position to do so.
I work hard and longs hours for my wage, as many of us do. Dont really drink anymore, dont gamble. So once the fridge and freezer is full, the kids are warm and clothed, bills are payed. Whats left is mine and i spend that on my passion for playing guitar.
