this brings to mind Stevie's number 1
which had neck stamp 63 body 61 or 62
yet pickups and pots 59. Subsequently Stevie says
I have a 59 which some people dispute because of the
neck and body but which component
do judge the latest One as Bodys don't change much
and Necks only change shape and can do so even
in their respective year I can
see stevies point with 59 pups and pots The guitar
would give the guitar a tonal represenation of a 59 stratocaster
but its all a matter of Opinion

If you peruse Ceri's thread on their face to face with Wilkinson, he comments on the so-called A.B.C.D neck issue and how haphazardly those necks were produced. I can only re-iterate ME's response in the positive, to a question I put to him regarding the 10/56 neck carve, that it was, indeed, the generic V-neck they put on the production guitars like the American Deluxe, Buddy Guy, the JV. As for the fine differences between the 'soft-v' of the Clapton, the '57VHR, and any other so described who knows. It begs the player to select what is comfortable. As for all these hybrids that we are seeing, whose specifications seem to run counter to what would be expected, at this stage of the game I would suggest that one goes with the flow. The heat generated in some of these debates isn't worth the squeeze. Hell...the company hasn't made any sense of its serial numbers and neck dates for years. The Gilmour project alone, spoke for that fact.

[quote="chrismagic"]I have a 56 NOS. It is a 10/56 "V" shape boat neck, alder body, 7.25 radius and small vintage frets.

Is this true for all FCS 56 NOS Strats?

One might think so. Go to www.codamusic.com. Go into the Quick Find box in the upper right corner and search '56 NOS. The guitar will come up in the top of the page. The guitar has that neck. It's definitedly NOT the generic Fender V-neck.

Have a look at the online stock of Custom Shop guitars at The Music Zoo, and Wildwood Guitars and see how their '56's come spec'd.

With respect to the Wildwood 10 guitars, the following is pasted from WW's website -

Wildwood 10 Neck Shapes and Sizes:
Necks are all hand sanded and vary a bit in size, these measurements are taken from individual guitars and represent an approximation of size and shape, please inquire for a hands-on description of specific guitars Taper refers to the graduation of thickness from the nut to the 12th fret

Mid 60's C Neck - .858" at the 1st fret - .943" at the 12th fret, slimmest of the Wildwood 10 neck profiles, the shape is similar to Fender's '65 neck shape ( .842"- .970" ) but not quite as large

'59 Large C Neck - .894" at the 1st fret - .970" at the 12th fret, Large tapered C neck with bigger "shoulders" than the Mid 60's neck, a chunky C shape

'57 Soft V Neck - .850" at the 1st fret - .999" at the 12th fret, A soft V neck shape that is similar to the '56 V Boat Neck although the '57 V Neck is more tapered (Slimmer at the 1st Fret and Fatter at the 12th Fret). The V shape becomes more rounded as it goes up the neck toward the body and has a C shape feel with a bit larger shoulder than the '56 V.

'56 V Neck - .896" at the 1st fret - .982" at the 12th fret, also known as the "Boat Neck", small "shoulders" with most of it's girth at the very center of the back of the neck, this profile is standard on a Fender Custom Shop '56 Strat model

Nocaster U Neck - .998" at the 1st fret - 1.013" at the 12th fret, this is the largest neck profile with very little taper, large "shoulders", this profile is standard on a Fender Custom Shop '51 Nocaster model

The Music Zoo list's a 56 NOS Masterbuilt as a 9.5" radius, as does Wildwood for their 10/56 version. So, I'm supposing a 9.5" radius would be correct for an original 56?

I think a vintage neck would be more like 7 1/4

Interesting to note that this 2009 '56 Custom Shop reissue Strat was fitted with a large U backshaped neck (just like mine) and not a V neck.
Weird no ?

Hmm, over the last couple of years there has been a trend seeing FCS moving away from recreating dead-accurate replicas of older guitars and introducing many features that are modern or otherwise not period correct; specifically large fret wire and flatter neck radii can be seen among a lot of 'reissue' guitars. Other things you frequently see are fatter sounding pickups and wood material not representative for the period (e.g. ash body on a '60 Strat). Probably just related to customer demand and/or Fender trying to create something new... nothing too weird about it if you ask me.
