Interesting discussion overall.

As to the original idea here--

If you are fine with only one guitar--great--go for it.
If you decide to assemble a large collection, and are able to legally and ethically do so--go for it.
If you're anywhere in between--that's fine as well.

Me?
I'm in between--I would have more guitars, except I have financial responsibilities I could not meet if I bought more.

Why do I have more than one?

As pointed out by others--they do different things, they play differently, they have different sounds, etc.
And it is fun.

I play each guitar differently from the others, so it helps me be creative and avoid or get out of ruts.

I don't have a large collection, but do I need as many guitars as I have?

No--in reality, nobody actually needs even one guitar.
We would not cease to exist if we were guitarless (Although it may feel that way for some)

So having guitars is not to fulfill a need, but a desire.

And those can be okay to have.

Keep in mind that Alain's philosophy is that these are playable works of art of which he sees himself as the preserver of same for posterity, particularly with respect to the Stratocaster and the Telecaster, already recognized as milestones of design and engineering, and not solely by the music industry at large.

As for myself, I would likely be more aggressive in my acquisitions were I 30 years younger, in the same financial position, and having the space to keep them, in that there are several instruments out there, of individual personalities, which I wouldn't mind owning. However, reality bites, and one has to look at things in the clear light of day.

If I was twenty and knew what I know now, I'd take a sleeping bag and a black Strat and move to the Crossroads till HE gave me the chops I am still working on...

Wood is a means to an end.

First of all Alain, I haven't learned anything from your site that I didn't already know, I've seen every guitar you claim to own somewhere else before I heard of you. If you think people ignore guitars then why do you put them up? are you sure it's not an attention thing? It's not hurt or jealousy that I feel, it's your arrogance that I hate, if you have plenty, fine, but don't flaunt it around to those who have not. you should have more respect for others, because not everyone on here is loaded. To mention a guitar here and there is no big deal, but to cover this whole site with you, you, you, is all out selfishness, and no one cares for that.

Dude, you have some serious issues. If you knew so much, then why did you go to Alains site in the first place? It's meant for people who want to learn. As Jesse said, of Alains posts here, about 85-90% of them have been to help people with questions. Then we have you, some newbie coming in, spewing some bullshit on how "arrogant" and "flaunty" Alain is.

You're not going to gain any supporters if you come in here running your mouth and insulting longtime/respected members.

+1

I am not a newbie to music as I have played bass for the last 30 years, and have been on and off with guitar for 40 yrs. I for one really appreciate guys like Alian that share their collection of fine instruments for those of us who can only dream of owning these beautiful instruments. There is nothing wrong with only owning one guitar or owning a million guitars! I own three basses. A 62 vintage reissue P-bass, a 64 CS J-bass, and an Upton standard string bass. I only own on guitar (a 62 Fender Japanese strat ) but I will be buying a CS Strat once I can afford it. Some people just love nice things be it guitars, watches, etc simply because they appreciate the beauty of those items, and collecting them gives them joy. Others view certain items as tools, and only buy them to use them for their craft. Others such as myself use them as tools, but appreciate the beauty that makes the item(s) special to them. Everything in this world is rented, but that does not mean we must limit ourselves to only what is necessary to accomplish certain objectives. If someone wishes to buy a room full of guitars I say more power to them. To Alian I say thank you for sharing your beautiful collection with those of us who can appreciate them without being jealous of your good fortune. The internet would be much less interesting to me without folks like you.

Many thanks Ritoma. :)
I do appreciate your understanding as well as the one of the "Old faithful" Members on this Forum.
PS I wish to point out again that the site shows guitars from several collectors, with the unique aim being to show what the very best luthiers in the world can produce now and also to show the epitome of what the greatest guitar manufacturers have produced in the past.

Those of us who know Alain well have understood his philosophy that his collection consists of works of art which must be played, not just set up to look pretty. This, in essence, has been his purpose, much to our collective benefit.
