The problem with the question "do relics sound better than NOS?" is that ANY two guitars sound different. For any relic'd Custom Shop guitar you find you can probably find a NOS Custom Shop guitar that sounds better, and vise versa.

If you're on the fence on whether to get a Relic or a NOS, give both guitars a shot, ignore anything anybody on any message board told you, and pick the guitar YOU like best!

Obviously that would be the vice thing to do, I agree. However, I plan to buy the guitar online in order to save money. In Denmark, I'll have to pay just bellow 4-5,000 dollars whereas if I buy it from the Uk online, I can get it for 3,000. This means I cannot test a bunch before purchasing. Moreover, I'm considering whether or not to go for "sort for light wood" and "sort for dark rosewood". If I do, I cannot return the guitar as it will, then, be a custom order.

By the time I get to the logs they are far from being a living tree, however, if you were to chop a maple tree soon after it dies, you'd find it's not wet inside, and despite the freshness of the wood if you knock a few pieces you find that some ring. Maple abounds so it's not too hard a thing to check out.

But if that is also such an outrageous claim for you, it's all right by me, really. There is nothing to debate.

The only sound I have ever heard raw wood make when it hits another piece of raw wood or the ground is "thud".

Which informs readers on how much you still have to learn about knocking on wood.

The only way I would pay that kind of money for a guitar I cannot play first is if the price was such that it'd be highly likely to get my money back reselling it, or that I could return it. I really sucks to be stuck with a multi-thousand dollar guitar that you don't like.

I've returned MB guitars to Wildwood more than once because they sucked to my ears. It cost me the shipping but at least did not lose $4K. Have an out, man.

Still waiting for that video of you banging to chunks of maple together and hearing them "ring like a bell". You're the one that made the claim, you're the one that has to prove it. But I doubt that will ever happen.

That's the thing: If I buy an "off the shelf" CS in UK, I can properly sell it and come out without a loss. And there's a 7 day return policy.

This is very strange.

Something easy to believe, like tonewood ringing, you find hard to believe.

Something hard to believe, that I have something to prove to you, you find easy to believe.

Unbelievable!

You are beginning to get discourteous, unprovoked, I suggest we part ways.

Look, I have no doubt that if you took two finished maple necks and banged them together that you would get some sort of tone out of them. Would they "ring like a bell"? Maybe, maybe not. It is your original statement that when chopping raw wood and the chunks hit each other or the ground (dirt? concrete? blacktop?) and they would "ring like a bell" that I find ridiculous.

Hey man I think Tiglath is right!
Wood chopping is a skill, and it´s anything but boring! It is a state of mind.
The axe rings too, and wood makes interesting sounds being chopped.
If Tiglath has chopped a lot of maple, there is no reason to question his claim.

Also I wouldn´t question Alain, as he has enough Custom Shop instruments to actually give an informed opinion.
I love the esoteric speculation about our beloved CS guitars and I am glad it will never go away!

Chop away forum friends!

By the way, my light Relic can kill your NOS! :D
cheers, Mike.

My neighborhood is chock full of maple trees; it's the firewood we use most around here.

It's funny to see such a common experience questioned in such a presumptuous manner, as if it was a most outlandish concept. I was telling my neighbor and I could not possibly repeat his comments without causing offense, which, unlike others, I try not to do.

Curiouser and curiouser... maple necks knocked together will ring, apparently, but pieces of maple that don't look like guitar necks won't. So... tone it's in the shape, folks, not the wood

Getting back to the original topic, I agree with Alain. Over the past several years, I've had twenty CS guitars, both relic and NOS. The best sounding were the relics. It may fly in the face of the science, but after a lot of hours playing these things, the relics just had the better tone. These were the guitars retained.

Now this was with the amps at clean, just before breakup, and with no pedals. So, for other purposes and styles, people might have a different outcome. Also, although the sample size is reasonable, each guitar is still its own thing.
