I've read many different things: Relics get the best wood, relic means finish is broken open = beter sound. What do you guys think?

Honestly, I think it's quite stupid in a way: it's just finish after all. I would much prefer a NOS and put my personal relic on it over time as a result of practicing many hours.

I like the look of a worn Strat though and it will take ages for as Nos to relic naturally when you only play it a few hours a week.

What do you think?

You guys drive me nuts when you say, "resonate more"! :)

That term makes no sense.

All things (objects) resonate.
Everything resonates at a specific frequency.
Nothing resonates "more", just at a different frequency.
There is no better or worse, just different.

Some people belief that guitars' wood 'breathes'. Two words: Dead wood.

Perhaps they refer to the evaporation of water content which might slightly affect its resonance, but if that was so much the case the best guitars would be unpainted. By the same token exposed wood can gain water by soaking it up from a humid environment. Strat necks in the East Coast lose relief in the summer and gain it in the winter, even "seasoned" necks as one would expect on a MB.

Science has a way to settle questions like this: it performs blind tests.

Guitar people are averse to those because it's a killjoy to realize say, that blindfolded you cannot tell apart the sound of the Callahan bridge for which you just forked out muchos dolares from a stock bridge, and so forth...

But here is a thing. When I chop wood from a maple tree to make firewood, quite often when pieces of maple hit the ground or other wood, they ring like a bell. "Ruined another potential good neck," flashes as a thought. But, when the logs are wet after a good downpour the wood never rings, not once. It's not very scientific but I have chopped a lot of wood over the years, and it's become to me significant anecdotal evidence that water dampens the vibration of the wood it soaks. I am talking about a lot of water and its noticeable effect.

I cannot say, however, and in fact doubt that the small water content remaining in a guitar body that has been dried will vary in ways that it is audible.

That is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. I would love to hear you post a recording of the sound of a log hitting dirt or another log. Living trees contain a significant amount of moisture. Its called sap.

Mike, if it drives you nuts, don't put out a video with john mayer talking about "black one" where he says the exact same thing I did. If you want people to know what the hell they are talking about, don't misinform them.

You must be the only person that pays attention to anything John Mayer says.

That's pitch. Resonant frequency. Higher or lower.

What is exactly the ridiculous part? You don't believe that when you knock certain pieces of cut maple you may hear a clear sound? Why do you think they call maple a tonewood?

You will need excellent hearing to hear me post anything. I use a silent keyboard.

By the time I get to the logs they are far from being a living tree, however, if you were to chop a maple tree soon after it dies, you'd find it's not wet inside, and despite the freshness of the wood if you knock a few pieces you find that some ring. Maple abounds so it's not too hard a thing to check out.

But if that is also such an outrageous claim for you, it's all right by me, really. There is nothing to debate.

Now you're spoiling the party. Don't end the old "maple vs. rosewood" debate.

Cheers

You are absolutely right. I wouldn't dare.

I tried once, though, and it wasn't pretty. Forget about maple v. rosewood. Blindfolded musicians can't tell buckers from single coil pups either, and there is more... but it's best to let huge, attack, sleeping dogs lie.

So I gather: until now, the genereal opinion is a big: NO! ?

Fine by me. Will save some bucks and get some personal relic on my NOS over time.

Sound quality should definitely be first but look and especially feel of a guitar is what is close #2. Could be Stradivarius wood, if it's cut like $@!&, I dont want to put my hands on it.

What would be very telling is blind test of a MIM strat vs a MIA strat vs a Cunnetto relic vs a CS vs a MB.

I'd be willing to bet that listeners preferences would be all over the place.
