No...

I'm still on the fence. I've found a couple of these problem guitars at some reasonable prices. They are definitely out there. We have a new family member coming on the 24th and the custom shop delivered quicker than expected. I had ordered a TB last february and it wasn't supposed to be delivered until October... well its on its way to me now. There are a number of factors that are making me start to think that its just not the right time.

You guys have helped me conclude though that the most important aspect of this purchase is that the guitar is in a condition that does not impact its intended tone. ie - replaced knobs are not a deal breaker if the price is right... I'll start a new thread of that guitar...

Thought I would give an update. I passed at the guitar that started this thread, but today I closed the deal on another Fessler '54. This one has everything but the vintage case - does have the modern case, will sit nicely in the closet with all the other cases I have. I traded my 2007 NAMM '57 HR and Jim Root strat for it. I'm just not a HR guy... I take delivery tomorrow! My first Masterbuilt! :D :D :D

I don't know if I can say where the guitar at the beginning of the thread is, but feel free to PM me if you are interested. They wouldn't meet me at my price.

beautiful figured ash on this one, did the original owner relic the neck, or is that actual wear? Give us a full report with some good pics when you recieve it. These are the best strats Fender has put out IMHO, I can't put mine down, congrats!

I'm not familiar with a "Fessler '54." Is this a non-Fender guitar or one from the CS?

It is a CS. Since each masterbuilder released these guitars throughout the year, I was referring to the masterbuilder of the guitar.

I'll get pic's together when I get it. I have problems with lighting when using my phone and the DSLR belongs to the wife so it might be a little tricky to sneak it away to take pic's of my mistresses. 8)

The guitar was delivered today. I haven't had a lot of time to play it yet. I am glad I am working from home though and could unwrap it ASAP!

Thoughts on the guitar -

Color: It is more brown than any other strat I have seen. I wasn't necessarily expecting this but it doesn't bother me. My wife loves the wood grain on it.

Neck: big and fat.. can't say much more. the finish on the fretboard does make gliding the fingers down a little sticky. The strings feel like 9s. I'll need to get new strings and a good setup.

Tone: neck pickup is very bass-y. Another surprise. Mid pickup nails fly like an eagle sound. Bridge pickup is more rounded than that of my other pickups. Again, I'll need more time with this to properly have an opinion.

Body: One thing I was curious about was the body contour. I'm sure the strats have a lot of variation "pre-production" but the fore-arm contour seems less extreme than the ones I have seen on other '54s (vintage). I was expecting the contour to extend past the strap holder, but this one ends about the same location.

This is my first Masterbuilt. I have to admit I am still a skeptic that the price difference between a TB and a MB is worth it. I wish I could compare 2 identical guitars (1 TB & 1 MB) to determine the nuances.

I'd be happy for people to share with me their opinions on the difference. Perhaps I have been extremely lucky with my custom order TBs because I feel like they are every bit as good as this guitar. They are different years... so I couldn't compare completely.

Interestingly enough I found my guitar on this site... cool someone did it!
